Mammogram and us negative, still worried
My doc found a lump in my left breast last week. I have a history of breast cancer in my family (grandma and aunt. My aunt eventually succumbed to it). Doc sent me for a mammogram yesterday. Had the mammogram and also an ultrasound. The tech did the ultrasound then had the radiologist come in to also do it. He said he found nothing although I have a palpable mass and they could all feel it. He told me to just check it once a month and if it changes to call my doc. With the history of breast cancer in my family, I'm very uneasy with this conclusion and plan. Has anyone else had a palpable lump that didn't show on a mammogram and/or ultrasound? If so, what did you do about it? Should I ask for a biopsy or an MRI or just trust the radiologist? I don't think my mind will be at ease just trusting his 1 minute ultrasound.

I found a lump in my right breast. Mammogram and Ultrasound negative. Dr is sending me for biopsy just to make sure.
I would ask for biopsy with your family history.
Good luck x

I think I will, thanks! Good luck with your biopsy!!

You will likely need to consult a surgeon for the biopsy. Radiologists very rarely if ever biopsy anything that cannot be seen on imaging.

Definitely seek a second opinion. I would be very uncomfortable just letting thiis ride. Not because you have breast cancer, but because they couldn't give you answers. Clearly, something is going in in your breast.

Okay, thanks!

Yeah, there is definitely and I am so uneasy about it. I generally go with my gut, so I feel the need to pursue this further.

Please do. My palpable lump was not seen on mammogram nor US and my incompetent PCP called and told me that everything was fine and did not recommend further testing. I assumed it was a fibroadenoma because my sister’s second tumor was found with US and I thought they could rule out cancer. 20 months (after another negative Mammogram and PCP exam) the lump started hurting. Only then did PCP say, mammos miss 15-20% of cancers. I knew this statistic, but did not think it included palpable lumps!

Wow! I had no idea mammograms and ultrasounds don't catch everything. I hope you're doing okay. I actually talked to my neurologist yesterday. (I have epilepsy and he is the only doctor I completely trust) and he referred me to a local hospital that can do 3D mammograms. He said in this case it should be able to see if there is anything to worry about.

I'm seeing a surgeon tomorrow. Pretty nervous. She is going to look at the results from my mammogram and ultra sound, feel the lump, and possibly do a biopsy. I'm not sure what to expect about the biopsy, like if it is painful. It sounds painful. Anyway, I'm not expecting it to be cancerous. I hope I'm not wrong.

Magnetic, try not to worry too much. I think the statistic is around 80% of biopsies are benign. My first biopsy, that I had years years ago, just hurt for a second. My recent was excisional and even that was not too painful. Good luck and let us know how your meeting with the surgeon goes.

Hi Magnetic, just curious how your meeting with the surgeon went. Did you have a biopsy?
