After a negative mammogram and ultrasound last week, I have an appointment with a surgeon about a palpable lump in my left breast at the location of 12 o'clock.  When the appointment was made on Friday, there was mention of a biopsy and also today when they called, a biopsy was mentioned.  For any of you who have had one, is a biopsy painful?  I'm not a wimp and I can handle it, but I am just curious. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Not bad at all. You’ll likely get lidocaine in the area—that’s a pinprick or two. Heads up, though, that the one I had quite a few years ago on the underside of the breast was pretty tender for a few days afterwards. I think it was having all that weight on it—lying down really helped. You should get sent home with a small ice pad that you can move between the freezer and your bra—love those!! (And oh yeah—the sound is kind of intimidating—a big kachunk every time they take a sample. They’ll probably warn you about that.)

    Hi Magnetic,

For me, it felt a little like someone was snapping an elastic band on my breast, not a big snap, not painful either. The freezing needles hurt more than the biopsy, but that doesn’t last long and isnt unbearable as the freezing takes over quickly. All in all I can honestly say I’ve had worse dental appointments. The thought of biopsy can be scary, but you’ll probably find it’s not as big a deal as you might imagine. Hoping everything goes smoothly for you, let us know how you do please. Will be thinking of you!
