April 2018- Starting Radiation
Comments
-
Hello. It looks like I get to join you lovely ladies! I finally go in for my simulation next Thursday and start rads sometime the next week. I’m pretty nervous about the whole process but anxious to get it over. Thanks for sharing your experiences as it is very helpful to know what to expect
-
Agatha, I read your step by step procedural and thought, robes? I walk into the rads room and strip from the waist up in front of four people prepping the table with my mold. Ha!
I'm 12/21 in, with 4 more whole breast treatments and 5 boosts left. A little pinkness and nipple soreness, but that's all. My tape is getting skeevy from Aquaphor, but still lined up where it needs to be. No tattoos.
Radiation has been much less of a monster than I'd imagined and it is an absolute relief to have begun, to feel as though you're finally walking on the path, rather than just looking down it
-
kaywrite - no robes definitely solves the problem of tiny lockers!
it's good to hear you're so far along without major skin issues. Good luck for finishing strong !
-
I hope you all are having a peaceful weekend. I've done some reading, some meditating, and a whole lot of daydreaming. Alas, the real world approaches. Time to start putting on my fierce warrior attitude.
Work tomorrow morning then first rad treatment at 1:00. Starting Tuesday they change to everyday at 10:30. Aquaphor, calendula cream, crystal essence deodorant, and loose tank tops ready. Not excited about the whole "no-shaving" thing, but whatever. I like showers.

Those of you already in treatment, I hope all is well and continues to be so.
Those starting this week~ ctmbsikia, okkate75 and anyone I may have missed....let's do this.
98hgmom, wishing you a smooth simulation. 19501952, may your appt with the RO go well.
Prayers, positive vibes, and good mojo to us all. 🌻
-
LiMa, good thoughts as you begin your radiation treatments.
-
Thanks LiMa. Good luck to you too! Does anyone have male radiation techs or are they female? I’m not sure how I will feel about having a male tech! It is kinda stressing me out just thinking about it
-
I've got one male tech at my center and my RO is male. All the techs seem very professional so far. At this point I'm so used to whipping out these boobs-in-progress to show random people that it just doesn't bother me anymore.

-
I have one male and two female. All are great. I do put on a hospital type robe in a dressing room. And as for shaving, I asked the nurse because I too thought that sounded unpleasant and there is enough unpleasantness in this entire process so she said I could use my husbands electric razor lightly once a week if I really wanted to and she said early on probably no issue and she thought later, if I did have any skin issues I would change my mind. I am 2 weeks in and have used it and just feel better about things so until I can't I will keep doing so. I also use the Tom's natural deodorant which isn't very nice but it is ok. I use regular deodorant on my non-treatment side.
I will have 10/30 this afternoon - a slight itch has started but very minor. All in all, this has been easier than I expected so far just a nuisance and it is better once you finally know what to expect so for those of you who have not started - it does get a bit easier just knowing what the routine is and getting to know your technicians.
Have a good week everyone - especially those just getting their first treatments this week!
-
Hi, everyone! I'm "excited" to get started this week, though I hate that I have to wait until Thursday. I just want to get the show on the road! My radiation oncologist suggested I don't need to start with calendula cream/aquaphor until I see side effects setting in. I was planning to start babying this left breast on Day 1. Any of your ROs have suggestions about this? Also, my tegaderms are starting to peel up a bit. Will they give me new ones, or are these marks from the planning session really expected to last until mid-May?
Good luck to everyone! LiMa66--thanks for going first this week!

Hey ladies. I see some familiar March rads ladies here so I figure, I guess I can join in with your bunch. I had 9/20 today, so nearly halfway there! It was nice to have the two day break over the weekend. I sleep like a baby becaue otherwise, I'm up at 4:30 am to get stuff done and be at my daily morning appointment. I am a morning person so I don't mind, but sleeping in until 6 seems like a real luxury!
I have the rads thing down pat these days. Get in my robe, sit in the waiting area maybe 5 minutes and they nearly always call me on time since i'm the second appointment. Then I get on the table, find my spot, relax every muscle in my body (the tech said to sort of melt into the table. Weird but the imagery helps me loosen it all up) and then a minute later, I get up and leave. No real SE to speak off. Slight pinkish-ness, very slight rash, nipple tenderness. That's about it. Totally doable. The worst part is the drive, which takes about 30 minutes since I get going so early and on the way home, I'm driving in the opposite direction of most of the downtown-headed traffic.
Happy Monday everybody!

Hi Paco
Kate, I started using Aquaphor after showering each night, prophylactic use, with a tshirt to bed to keep the greasiness at bay. I'm not using anything else, but not having any problems.
My tape has lasted fine, just one small areanow getting a bit off at 12/21. And I had it for a week before starting rads.
-
My radiation techs are female and my RO is male. Treatment 6/33 this morning, saw my RO after...slight redness and warm feeling, RO mentioned increasing Aquaphor from twice a day to three times a day due to my fair completion and sensitivity. He also reminded me to apply sunscreen to chest, neck when going outside for an extended period of time.
Paco, I like the early morning appts also, get rads done and continue with rest of my day.
Okkate, happy to see your on a schedule for rads...it feels nice to have a consistent schedule instead of waiting all the time.
-
98hgmom - There was a male radiation therapist at my simulation, the other 2 were female. Everyone was so professional that I really didn't even think about it to be honest. Sorry you are stressing about it. Maybe before you start treatment you can discuss it with someone at your radiology center. The extra stress isn't good for you and they're aware of that. Maybe they can try to schedule when there are more female techs/therapists on duty?
OKkate75 - my RO suggested I start moisturizing with calendula and aloe 2x per day for weeks before treatment started in preparation. If during treatment I had significant damage I could change to an Rx cream.
I start next week and opted for late appointments (7pm) so that I could go after work. I'm sure that will mean extra time in the waiting room, but I'm up for a new job that could start while I'm doing radiation and I don't want any appointments that could interfere for my work day.
-
I forgot to mention that I have had exposure (literally and figuratively!) to both male and female techs. There always seems to be someone new who appears in the LINAC room. The RO is a male, his PA is a male, and the residents have been women. A mixed bag for sure and multiple folks have had the dubious honor of seeing and at times, touching, my breast. lol. I figure, after having birthed three babies vaginally, there isn't much left in terms of my modesty. Leaving it at the door of the hospital!
-
Okkate75- glad to take one for the team.

Was very interesting and not all that uncomfortable. If they hadn't kept telling me to take a deep breath and then to breath I might have fallen asleep. The techs were very professional and explained everything to me in great detail. I got samples of Aquiphor and Miaderm. My RO prefers Miaderm, but he doesn't have to pay for it, so I'm going to use the Calendula Cream. I hope. For some reason I expected to feel different afterward. Nope, still the same. Except now I can yodel. Odd.
Hope your Monday has been good.

-
Hello everyone! I started my radiation today. I have the Savi Cath. It was painless. But I wanna know has anyone here had the Savi Cath
-
Welcome, DapDan! We hope your radiation treatment goes well, you're in a very supportive place!

Thanks for the tips everyone. I guess my modesty may get the best of me. I can’t wait for all of this to be over
-
There are so many indignities we've all had to suffer - I am to the point now where I don't even seem to realize how often I seem to be topless in front of all kinds of strangers!
Good luck to those of you just starting - I'm a third of the way through now. I do have some itchiness, rash, and pinkness starting - have hydrocortisone cream for the itchiness and since my treatment is around noon I will move to use the Thera lotion three times a day now - early morning (more than 4 hours before treatment) after the treatment and before bed so hopefully that keeps anything worse at bay.
Weather is improving (maybe) this week and that should go a long way to improving my mood and sense of fatigue - which I think is more seasonal affective disorder than treatment related

-
Well put me too! Oh the indignities this disease has caused. Now I just need to learn to deal with them! Good luck to all today
-
I met with my RO after today's treatment and will do so every Tuesday. All good so far. He gave the ok for the calendula cream, said it works very well.
-
Hospital called. Machine is down.
-
Well that's a bummer! I hope it's fixed quickly so you can get started. Big virtual hug.
-
ctmbsikia - I think that's Strike 4!!! Sorry to hear you have another hurdle. I hope the machine is good to go tomorrow and you have smooth sailing for the rest of your radiation experience. Sending positive thoughts your way.
-
AMH51 - I was good for the first 9 treatments -just had my 11th yesterday. Between the 9th on Friday and the 10th on Monday I started getting a little itchy. Yesterday, after #11 I definitely noticed more pinkness and a little more itching. Not bad, but some reaction definitely starting. The hydrocortisone cream they gave me did the trick for itching and since my treatments are at lunchtime I now do lotion 3x per day, early morning, after treatment and before bed. Hopefully, that will keep it at bay. I am a little less than halfway there so hoping to manage it closely. I just keep reminding myself I was lucky to avoid chemo and this is a small price to pay in the long run to keep cancer at bay.
Continued good wishes to all of you as you continue your journey. I am part of the March group too and many are finishing up or close to finishing. I imagine how good that will feel!
-
Hello! Starting radiation on Tuesday April 17th, 20 sessions. I have calendula soap and cream, Aquaphor (large bottle and travel size, as I have a bit of a daily commute to the hospital) and clear Aloe Vera Gel. In many ways, this has been a whirlwind ad. In many ways this has been a whirlwind adventure with a whole lot of hurry up and wait thrown in. So looking forward to getting started and moving ahead
-
Going tonight @ 8:50pm unless the phone rings again, which I am now fully prepared for and I shall remain on the ledge and not go over!!
Don't they know it's playoff hockey season? No evening appts! LOL At this point I'm just accepting whatever they say....
-
Jumping in here to join the group. I just had my CT scan yesterday as the set-up for radiation which will begin on 4/24. I have asthma, so holding my breath for as long and as deeply as they want me to was difficult, but I did it. The mold that fits around my head and shoulders is uncomfortable, but I'm going to ask if I can wear a soft hat for the appointments. So ready for this all to be over. But chemo is done, and I'm happy for that!
-
metoo2018 - Thank you so much for sharing such specific info. I start next week and it's good to know somebody else's timeline just for reference. I hope the itchiness keeps under control. How many treatments are you scheduled for?
EarlyAnna - Hi, and welcome :-) I'm starting the same day as you and have 20 sessions scheduled, too. Are you doing it on your back or face down? Have you already started moisturizing in advance. I try to do my calendula/aloe/cocoa butter/lavender routine 2x a day but haven't been as on top of it as I should be. And drinking a lot of water. I have to remember that, too :-)
ctmbsikia - Can I call you "Underdog" instead of ctmbsikia? I love him and Polly Purebred :-) REALLY hope your radiation center doesn't throw you any more curve balls - you deserve uneventful, smooth radiation therapy from here on out! My appointments are going to be later in the evening, too. Did you request that? I did because I wanted to go after work, but I've been furloughed/layed off so not necessary, but I'll keep them that way anyway.
PrincessButtercup - Welcome! Good for you for getting the breath hold down. Everyone brings such individual challenges to cancer treatment. It makes me feel proud when I hear how different people work it out. Hope they let you wear a cushy cap.
Hope everyone is having a good week!
-
I haven't started rads yet, appt w/RO April 18 for CT scan. I get so anxious and emotional...ugh! Worried about the lymph node involvement (especially since my surgery was Jan 26 and there's been no treatment started yet). Thankful for FAITH, FRIENDS, and FAMILY.
