my wife just received dx of DCIS + HR, in 1 breast. We were told this is non invasive with good prognosis, found via stereotatic biopsy not present anywhere else. She is going for a lumpectomy soon , the issue is that she is on Premarin and has been for a while. We know that she will have to be off that med. She is worried about the effects when she is off it. Though the Doctor mentioned all options with lumpectomy being the one we both agreed on . My wife is now talking about getting a double mastectomy so it never returns then get back on Premarin. I am feeling that she doesn’t need to have that surgery butI know it’s her ultimate decision. I am having a difficult time with this while being loving and supportive .

    We're really sorry to read that your wife has received this diagnosis but we do hope that you'll find the boards helpful.

    It sounds like you are being super supportive to your wife during an understandably difficult time. As you said the final choice will be hers and we do hope others chime in with their words of wisdom here.

    What a living and supportive husband you are. It is a very difficult time for both of you. BC is such an insidious disease.

    My mother was taking Premarin when she was DX. Her doctor immediately took her off of it. It was a long time ago so I don’t remember any side effects she had when she stopped taking it. The fact is there is evidence it contributed to her BC DX.

    She should have a conversation with her doctor about this.

    I can tell you right now that she will never get the Premarin back! Same diagnosis here and had a mastectomy. I was taken off of the Premarin immediately and that was 6.5 years ago. I felt better when I took it, but honestly, it hasn't been that bad being off of it. So, regardless if she has a mastectomy or lumpectomy, the estrogen will be off of the table for her.
