Not happy with my Diep flap surgery!

I had my surgery in February 2018, and was told the incisions would look like a breast reduction with a disc of skin vs a nipple. I knew the left Radiated breast would have a panel to some degree. When I finally saw my breasts for the first time,I was so upset!! The left one had a large panel, in fact it's large in general! The "healthy" right breast ALSO had a panel on it and is smaller and saggier! NOT what I was expecting, and am worried the stage 2 surgery can't correct all the issues I have! Is this all normal, am I being to impatient? Help please, has ANYONE not been happy with there diep flaps?!

yes, stage 2 can fix a lot. It’s called the “make them pretty” stage for a reason. You don’t have your stats listed so I can’t tell if you had a UMX or a BMX with DIEP or why the delay of over a year for stage 2 - perhaps you were doing chemo? Were they supposed to operate on the right breast during stage 1? As far as size and sag...the DIEP breast will typically be larger than before as the surgeon is trying to get as much tissue to stay out & survive during stage 1. It’s much more successful to build the breast big and reduce in stage 2 vs going smaller and trying to fat graft to make it bigger. The right breast may just appear smaller and saggier because it’s being compared to the overstuffed DIEP breast. Also for the women that had to have a panel put in, the PS will reduce those scars/the panel down in stage 2. Then if you opt for nipples and do tattooing the scars of the panel should be well concealed. Odds are when the pS told you that it would look like you had a reduction he likely meant when all is said & done. You’re not quite there yet. I know I was glad to have breasts after my stage 1 but I was not very happy with how they looked, size, sag, etc. I can honestly say that after stage 2 I am thrilled with the results. When are you supposed to have stage 2? And out of curiosity, did the PS show you any before and after pics of his previous work before you decided to move forward with him?

My DIEP was hard as a rock the first few months. It looked pretty good. I was worried about the red scars but they all faded. Under my arm I can see the pieced together skin but it got better. I think almost all my work was completed in stage 1, stage 2 was more sore from fat grafting. I think I might do tge fat grafting again at the end of summer.
We shouldn't have to go through this. I hate cancer and the treatment.

Wingracie-if you read some of my posts, you can see that I'm not happy with my breasts after stage one. I'm REALLY relying on Stage two to make them match. I had a lot of burned tissue on my flat side, so the PS had to take a bigger portion of skin from my abdomen to makeup for it. Most women have a football shape of new skin. I have a giant circle, impossible hide when wearing something low-cut if I dare do that. I'm thinking I might get a pretty tattoo to cover the scar when I get my nipples tattooed. Maybe a pretty cherry blossom branch?? My biggest concern is that one breast looks like it should be one one body and the other belongs to someone else!! One is flat and super round, maybe a B cup. The other is droopy/saggy and a C cup, with a big round incision in the middle. That breast has to be lifted. The other needs fat grafting. My PS who did my flap Just will not show me photos. He says it's “not necessary". And he said “No ones breast are exactly the same", which to me means he is giving himself an “out" in case he can't come close. So I went to another PS for a second opinion who said he can ABSOLUTELY make them match! Better than if they were real! That's the vote of confidence I needed. I just pray I can afford him since he is out of network.
Anyway, hang in there. Talk to your surgeon. If you are not happy with his answers (Mine also said to me..."Well you look better than when I first saw you." Grrrrrr!!!! UNACCEPTABLE!!!!), then get another opinion.
It will all work out in the end. Just don’tlet anyone take advantage of you or boss you around. It's YOUR body. Only you can make the final decision.
Good luck!!!

To Not Happy with DIEP flap. Just have patience. Things will settle down and scars will heal just have patience. If you don't like your results after waiting and being patient go to the New Orleans group and they can help. I had one many years ago and I have not had any issues with it. The greatest thing is that it is YOUR tissue! No fear of rejection and its soft, warm and feels just like your own breast. I would have never gone with implants. I just didn't want anything foreign in my body. I understand some people are not candidates for a DIEP but if you do have enough tissue I think ts the best alternative to any other surgery.
Yes you will have some scars but I call them Survivor scars! and I am proud of them.
