Mastectomy after a lumpectomy
Was wondering if anyone that had chosen a Lumpectomy with their original diagnosis. Had opted to have a bilateral Mastectomy later?
I had a lumpectomy on my right breast in 2015. Went through chemo and radiation. In 2016 I had a what my Oncologist called a local reoccurrence in the lymphnodes at my right clavicle (aka Supraclavicular lymph nodes) I went through chemo and radiation on my neck.
I am set to co for my 3rd biopsy on April 10th this time it is my right breast again !!! My gut reaction in 2015 was to have a Bilateral Mastectomy and be done with it! My breast surgeon convinced me to do the breast conserving surgery! I’m am considering no matter the biopsy results asking about Mastectomy... Has anyone had any experience with this? Do you regret the decision to have the Mastectomy? Did your insurance cover this option?

I had lumpectomy and re-excision for margins in 2015. I would have been content with that, except my genetic testing came back bad. My MO strongly recommended that i get rid of those puppies. So, i had BMX about 6 weeks after i finished chemo.
Although i had a lot of complications and was left with pretty substantial scarring, i do not regret my decision. Do i like the way i look? No, i do not. Not in the least. But my 1.9cm ER+PR- tumor was considered to be more aggressive, so now i feel like I've done absolutely everything i could to prevent recurrence. We shall see...

I did not do lumpectomy first but went with mastectomy right out of the gate. Had immediate DIEP flap recon and have absolutely no regrets about it. In fact, I look better now than I did prior to surgery (and I looked pretty darn good before).

My sister first had Lumpectomy, but then we learned she and I had a Chek 2 gene mutation so she opted for at the recommendation of the medical team, to have a BMX. She is so happy she did. She could not stand the anxiety of having a mammogram.

I was diagnosed in December. Had a lumpectomy in my left breast in January. My nodes were clear but my margins were not. I had two places that were not clear. My breast surgeon said that there was no breast tissue left in those areas. All that was left was skin over muscle. He said he would have to remove a large portion of skin in order to get the spots in question. I opted for BMX with DIEP Flap Reconstruction. I am six weeks post op. I do not regret my decision. The decision to have a BMX was easier for me to make because I had a simple mastectomy. Because we learned so much about the cancer when I had the lumpectomy, I did not have any more lymph nodes removed and I did not have my chest muscle removed which is done in a radical mastectomy. My Oncotype Score was 14 which took chemo and rads off the table. I am on day 3 of Anastrozole.
If I had chosen BMX as the first step in my treatment plan I would have chemo and rads.
