edited April 2018 in Not Diagnosed But Worried

hi all. I am new to this site. I had my annual mammogram and was called back for additional testing. I had a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound. The radiologist met with me after and said I have an area of distortion in my right breast. It is only seen on the mammo, not the ultrasound. She also said there were no cysts, masses, or calcifications. She thinks it is a radial scar but recommended a stereotactic biopsy to rule out malignancy. My Birads rating was a 4b. In my research I know radial scars can hide cancer. I am so scared. I met with my gyn. He wanted a surgeon to do the biopsy. So I met with the surgeon and she did a breast exam and an ultrasound and didn’t feel or see anything. She said she wanted to remove the whole distortion. Her reason for this is if it is a radial scar it would need to be removed anyway. I have surgery scheduled for next week. And I will not get my results until the following week. I am 41 years old with a young daughter. I am so scared this will be cancer. I am hoping someone who has been through something similar can provide some hope, support, advice...anything.

i too was called back today for a follow up mammo. It shows a cluster of some calcification so i need to see the breast surgeon Monday and likely a biopsy Tuesday. I fear the worst too so not happy about it. They said i am a 4 and i think b. I too don't want to wait a week or more to sort this out! So i understand how you feel! I am 43

I went through something similar - architectural distortion on the mammogram, but nothing found on the ultrasound. I ended up having an MRI guided biopsy, which showed that I had a radial scar and ADH. I had it all removed through an excisional biopsy, and no cancer was found lurking there. I hope the same holds true for you

Before you get through my post, my radial scar was not why I had a mastectomy. Last July mammo clean, sono showed 2 spots. One Birads 4. Biopsied the one on my left, came back as some benign findings including radial scar. Met with the bs who said occasionally a radial scar may have cancer nearby. She said it was a small chance and if they did find something it would be tiny and I would be fine. All I could hear was maybe cancer. Fast forward I go through pre-op. My surgeons team questions a spot on my right ultrasound that my radiologist did not note in her report. They do a biopsy, cancer. I opted for a double mastectomy since I was going to have to have a chunk taken out of my left for the scar, I went all the way.

Point of the story is...when I saw my surgeon after surgery, she said there was no cancer found in my left where the radial scar was. I know its scary, but try to hold on that already two of us had a radial scar with no cancer hidden there. :) Hope the same is for you too. Hang in there.

Thank you ladies for your stories. It helps to know others have had similar experiences. I am hoping my biopsy goes well( nervous about that too) and the results are benign. The waiting is torture.

Exhaustedmind1 - I understand exactly how you feel if you need a biopsy, I hope the results are benign.

Update. My biopsy showed atypical Ductal hyperplasia and flat epithelial atypia. So not cancer so far but abnormal precancer cells. So I am having surgery to remove that area too. From that they tell me if there was anything worse. So I am trying to calm down for now realizing it is atleast not cancer so far but worry it will be found when they look at the whole thing. But I guess it will just hopefully all be removed either way. But even precancer cells bother me and I wonder what I can do to never go through this again.

Worried18: I hope your results are benign and Iempathize with the torture of this process . I have almost made myself sick over this. But we have to stay positive to help our bodies and there are worse things so it’s all about perspective.

Exhaustedmind1- glad to hear your biopsy results were NOT cancer. Praying your surgery goes well and the results don’t change. I am having my surgery today. So nervous and I will not get the results until next week. Praying for benign results

I also had calcifications, turned out to be DCIS, grade 2, which is not cancer, but precancer, possibly. Am having surgery in 2 weeks. This seems to be very common. My sister-in-law had it, said the follow-up radiation is a breeze. Fingers crossed for us all

Exhaustedmind1- thanks for asking. The wire biopsy and surgery went well. Recovery has not been too bad. Just sore. The waiting is the worst part. I am trying to keep busy but my anxiety is so high right now it’s hard. I am so nervous to find out the results. I keep praying my path results are benign.
Did you have your surgery yet?

Update: I had my appointment this AM for my pathology results. They were BENIGN!! It was a radial scar and it was completely excised when I had my biopsy last week. I am so relieved.

I can't thank you all enough! This site is very helpful during stressful times.
