Hi! I have a strong familial history of breast CA (both grandmothers, all aunts, mother, and 2 sisters - Mom & sister deceased). I have been having various symptoms as well. I am having my first mammogram this week, followed by bloodwork and genetic testing. What are everyone's thoughts on prophylactic treatment...mastectomy and medication? Just trying to get my ducks in a row.

I’d want to find out a few things before taking the next step. I’d find out my breast density and how well my breasts image. I’d want to talk to a genetic counselor to determine my risk. I’d want to know if any of my living relatives who are BC survivors have had any genetic testing or if they might be willing to do so. I did high risk screening and I always knew if something came up I have a PBM. Take things step by step. Knowledge is power.

Kiki1970, I am 34 years old and just completed the reconstruction process after a prophylactic double mastechtomy. I would recommend getting tested first. Color.com has testing that is simple and reasonably priced. I was tested when my sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I was positive for BRCA and decided to have a full hysterectomy and double mastechtomy. I am currently 3 weeks out from my last surgery to complete the process and I have to say that I feel that a huge weight has been lifted. I'm very happy with my decision and would do it all over again if I needed to
