Another MRI?!
So I just had a breast MRI. Horrible torture device if you ask me! Anyways, I had the test yesterday. First some background, I have silicone implants subglandularly. Never any issues or pain with breasts or implants until last year. Found a lump that HURT and had a bx and was dx with complex fibroadenoma, and also found ADH by lx. That same breast has been getting progressively more painful and intolerable. Noticed a lump on my left as well. Mammo showed cluster of enlarged Aux LN but no lump. Had MRI. MRI is suspicious for implant rupture bilaterally says the nurse via phone, and there is also an area of enhancement on the left, same side as the nodes. RD wants another MRI w/o contrast bilat followed by US done by himself. I have to wait two weeks so HE can personally do the tests. Why does the RD want to make sure he doesthis and why the new MRI? These things are 6k+! What is the purpose of the US after the MRI? I had a US and it couldn't find anything which is why we went to MRI

I don't know anything about MRI's, but it really sucks that you've been asked to have another one! About the US, I'm guessing that your current RD does not trust the earlier US and hence wants another one for comparison with the MRI? One doctor I visited in Feb made me get a second US because he wanted it done by the RD in his own hospital.

Hi Cattledoglv, when I went through diagnosis I flip flopped between the various scanning devices. As I understand it, each has their strengths and weaknesses. My onc told me that MRI was most definitive. Sounds like your RD wants to personally oversee to be absolutely sure of the findings. I'm no doctor so don't take my word for it. You could post your questions to Djmammo...he is a doctor and will know best. Hope everything goes your way through it all, keep us posted

Unless the MRI was subpar somehow I don't understand why he can't do an ultrasound to try to validate or examine or duplicatethe findings on the MRI that was already done. Personally, unless it was absolutely necessary, I would not want to subject myself to another dose of the contrast material, much less the discomfort and expense of the test, until someone explained to my satisfaction why the necessity for a second MRI.

So after further study, the MRI won't be done with contrast because the best way to find a rupture is without contrast. The first MRI I had no contrast for only about 5-10 minutes into it, so I think they see evidence of ruptures but want to be sure, hence the MRI without contrast this time. The US is to see the area of enhancement I'm assuming? Thank you ladies. It's nice to have some friendly input

I know, Melissa. It is a tough choice. I’m in a lot of pain so I’m ready to do or pay just about anything. If I find out the implants are ruptured, the company will pay a certain amount towards surgery (I think around 3-4K) to have them removed. Some Drs are now performing breast reductions for women who are high risk with extremely dense tissue like me. So, I will get the implants removed and have a mini reduction. I could pay for it myself, which I will if I have to,but if I have evidence they’re ruptured, I’d rather they foot part of the bill, you know?
