Hi,

I am new here; I’ve been browsing to find anyone with similar experiences to mine. I am 26 with no family history of breast cancer. I happened to find a lump in my right breast (to the left of my nipple, my 9:00) over the weekend. I’m not positive how long it’s been there as I do not do regular self-exams, but I assume less than 6 months. It feels about the size of my finger tip and is firm, and it’s not on the surface near the skin. You have to press down a bit to feel it. It does not hurt at all. It doesn’t seem to move, which is what worries me the most, because moveable lumps are generally better? I have scheduled an appointment with my PCP, but she will be out of town until next week. I am going crazy with anxiety now. Any advice is appreciated.

You did the right thing by making an appointment with your PCP. But if you're that anxious, you might find out if you can see someone this week? Not because it needs to be addressed right away but for your peace of mind. Wherever you go, make sure you don't leave before getting a referral for a mammogram and/or ultrasound. Your doctor might say that it feels like a fibroadenoma or a cyst and that young women with no family history don't usually get breast cancer and that may be right, but better safe than sorry. Self-advocate! Stop googling and freaking yourself out on the internet until you have more information. I don't want to scare you, but I was 28 with no family history and my PCP told me she thought it was probably benign but unfortunately it wasn't. But I also stupidly waited until it was the size of a golf ball and had nipple changes. Yours sounds small, so even if it's bad, you'll be ok. I'm ok. :)

Sturdywalls, I'd like to add that the chances of your lump being cancer while not 0%, are incredibly small nonetheless. Nothing bad will happen if you wait until next week to see your PCP, but as Cornflake Girl said, if you are crippled by anxiety, you might want to see if your OB or another doctor in your PCPs practice can see you. This is not something you'd go to the ER or Urgent Care for. I'm sorry that your concerns brought you to this site, and I hope this turns out to be nothing to worry about
