As a UMX, I was told I needed the Arimidex to protect my remaining natural side...well, I am unhappy with the results of the UMX and very unhappy with the bone loss side effect of the AI...so, the question is, if I have a MX on my remaining good breast, could I stop the Arimidex? I know folks with invasive stages are still on Arimidex with the BMX...but for DCIS folks is that also true???

I am so sorry for your frustration. I am not a doctor. Hope my experience with DCIS will be helpful.

First, Let's suppose my surgery pathology confirms pure DCIS (no microinvasive). I was told by two doctors that hormonal therapy is not required if I choose mastectomy. But both radiation and hormonal therapy are required if I choose lumpectomy. I wasn't told the reasons behind this other than experimental studies. My guess is that when doctors performs lumpectomy surgery for DCIS, cancer cells have the opportunities escaping into surrounding blood vessels and then possibly move to the whole breast and even whole body. That is why radiation and hormonal therapies are both required.

I saw you had lumpectomy first, so I would keep hormonal therapy just to be on the safe side. Maybe talk to your doctor to switch to other hormonal medicine if possible.
