Thanks for your support, H4U! I Will investigate the anti-friction stick; because the foam pads aren't helping.

Fortunately, my therapist has been teaching me how to wrap. I'm not sure I'd recognize a flare, but I'm guessing that it would be similar to the symptoms that caused me to want it evaluated in the first place.

Could be that the LE was already present before I fell, but that injury triggered it. Whatever, I'm stuck with it now

Well, I finish up my Lymphedema therapy this week. My therapist said that I am down to 1% swelling and am capable of handling it on my own with self-massage and my sleeve. However my range of motion is still horrible. I can't raise my arm above my head. So my oncologist has referred me for physical therapy. I start it tomorrow. My Lymphedema therapist told me last week that was probably best. I have been traveling an hour to see him. And he said a PT can help me with the range of motion better than he can and I can get that 5 minutes from my office. Which is where they referred me. He just told me to remind them that I am a breast cancer survivor with mild Lymphedema and he said don't let them beat me up.

I started my PT at the place 5 minutes from my office. I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I had a frozen shoulder 5 years ago on the other side. Well, I ended up with the same PT that I had for that shoulder. I had worked with him for a year on that shoulder before I finally had to have surgery. I hope this one ends up better! I do have confidence in my PT. When I was referred to him the first time around my Dr told me he was the best. I thought about asking for him this time but I knew he had moved to an office across town. So I was very surprised to see him here. I told him I thought he moved and he said he came back just for me. Lol

I am STILL waiting for the referral to a LE therapist! This has gone on for weeks while I go back and forth between my MO's office and my PCP's office. Finally today my PCP's office called the MO's office for me. Hopefully I will have a referral by the end of the week. I am hoping I am still early enough to be able to cure this. I have days I don't notice anything and days like today that my bicep is tight and my whole arm hurts and my fingers swollen.

my arm feels numb down close to my elbow. It doesn’t really look swollen but I’m thinking a bit of lymphadema. I guess I’ll wear my sleeve tomorrow to work and see if that helps. Ug

TaRenee, I was just wondering about that. My right (LE arm) thumb was tingling and now it’s numb on top as is the back of my hand and lower arm. And I was wondering if this is because of the wrapping or the LE itself. And what I could do about it...

Nats, you will know if it’s a wrapping problem because you should be fairly comfy while wrapping but if you get blue fingers or a feeling like you want to rip the whole thing off after awhile then it’s probably to tight. Go rewrap! Ugh hate when that happens. Sometimes I just rip it off in the middle of the night and wake up with with bandages all over the top of my quilt!

Well I wore my sleeve to work today. I don’t know if it helped. May take a few days. It still feels numb. I’ll keep trying.

it's also possible if your only wearing sleeve and not glove or gauntlet you could be pushing fluid into your hand making it uncomfortable there.

Also if my thumb on my hand compression is to tight it will make my thumb numb and tingly. Ahh so hard to figure out what's going on. Otherwise I get no numbness around elbow. Everyone is different. Sigh!

Keep trying different things. I put big fat marker in my finger gloves to stretch them a bit when there wet. That gets rid of tightness.

natsera, my LE therapist told me after he wrapped my arm if it felt too tight, or if I had pain or numbness at any time to take it off.

hugz4u, my gauntlet causes just the fingertip of my thumb to go numb. It's a very strange feeling. Lol They told me to put something with a slightly larger diameter than my thumb in the thumb hole and stretch it.

Hi ladies- unfortunately I’m also here seeking advice. I have checked out the step up website. It looks like I’ll be joining the big L club as well. I finally have an appointment with a Lymphedema therapist, but it’s not for another 4 weeks. My swelling seems to be under my arm and forwards to my mastectomy scar, with new cording developing as well. ( I had some after surgery but solved that with lots of stretching and massage.) Is there anything I can do in the meantime? I don’t want to make anything worse from doing the wrong “solution”. Should I just wait and leave it alone? I’m worried a compression garment will make things worse under my arm. I’ve been pretty positive through to this point, but This newest complication has me pretty bummed. I’m Sick of complications!

Ah, Cpeachy, I'm so sorry you're faced with this new nastiness! And how frustrating to have to wait so long to address it (though that sure happens a lot--lymphedema therapists are busy folks). You need to know you're in good company on the emotional drag of this diagnosis--it does smack us hard, right in the self-image among other things. Here's an article that has helped some of us cope with that part of it:

    http://www.stepup-speakout.org/patoconnorcopng.htm

And here are some suggestions for what to do while you're waiting for that appointment:

    http://www.stepup-speakout.org/How_You_Can_Cope_wi...

The treatment itself is gentle and not uncomfortable, so something to look forward to without dread. There's a learning curve for sure, but once you're equipped with the information and new skills you need it's all manageable. Hang in there, and please do keep us posted.

    Chocolate helps! Gentle hugs,
    Binney

cpeachy. A men's extra tight two sizes smaller compression tee made by underamour brand may do the trick until you see someone. The men's tee sleeve is longer and doesn't creep up and gives more coverage.

Binney, where you been, Alaska? I miss you! Iordered wearease compression tee in beige yesterday. Phyliss gave me 30 percent off because of shipping to Cnd and Cnd dollar. She's a doll everyone. Let's support her? Should be coming soon! I'll report on it.

Thank you ladies for the replies. Binney4, I have been checking out the links- wow is that first one extensive! Probably needed, as I’m still trying to accept my physical limitations. (Shoveling anyone?)

Hugz- that’s a great idea. I may have to look into finding boys sizes though because I’m pretty small and I doubt a men’s small will do much for compression on me. I didn’t see any on their website, but maybe a sporting goods store. The women’s sleeve may be too short, and long sleeves are out of the question with the hot flashes! I will keep looking

Lately I have got Hub into the act of helping me with my LE exercises.

I had a flare up not long ago, never know what sets it off but my goodness it is miserable and deeply aching. My regular stretches usually straighten me out in a few days but this last time it was particularly bad so I got Hub to help out.

I laid on floor, flat on my back, arms up above my head, but laying on the floor. Then Hub knelt down up by my head, took each of my hands and gently and slowly PULLLLLEEDDD on my arms, as if he was trying to make me taller. He didn't lift them up in the air. He pulled them level with the floor. Very slowly and with great care. Hurt like an SOB! But it seems to have done the trick and got some damned up flow open and moving.

PS. I think I'm at least 2 inches taller now.

    Happy

I have a question : my lymphedema in my right arm is mild at this point. I'm wearing a sleeve during the day (goal is preventing it from getting worse) and my therapist told me that I could either sleep free or wrap it at night. But I don't really understand the criteria for making that decision. If my right wrist is ½ inch bigger than my left wrist and forearm part of elbow is ¼ inch bigger and upper arm where the deltoid muscle indents is actually ¼ inch SMALLER, I'm just confused as to what I should or shouldn't do. I just know he said not to sleep in the sleeve.

    Any advice? Thanks!

Question: Any recommendations on good weather proof gloves to wear for light gardening? My LE is very mild (“pre LE” is what my PT calls it), but I want full protection out in the garden. I wear compression when exercising, flying or if I get that heavy achy feeling in my arm.

Spring is almost here.... I think

Hi ladies. I need some help. On my Left side, where the lymph nodes were removed, the cancer side, the back of my elbow going up my arm is numb. Not heavy. Not necessarily swollen. Numb. It has been this way for a few months. Wearing compression sleeve doesnt seem to help. When I take it off the numbness returns. I had really nasty cording on that side and PT got most of that cleared up (finished PT in Jan). Any suggestions

Tarene. Not sure but that could be nerve damage as my back of arms 10 years out are numb. Still watch for any aches weirdness and report to your therapist. Make sure you have measurements taken also. report numbness to your lymphedema therapist
