I believe I will have my period (joy) on the day of or day after my surgery. I am having diep flap suregery Friday. I know I will have a catheter, but how does it work if you also have your period? do you wear undies when the catheter is in? If so, does a pad work? I assume tampons are not going to work.

How do I change things if I am in a bed? I'm so confused how things work.

Thanks!

It will be fine. They'll provide you with a pad in their disposable panties or put you on a large disposable soaker pad. The nurses will change it & clean you as required. Don't worry about it, just tell them.

yup, nurses have seen everything!! I had my period during my lumpectomy and it wasn't a big deal at all. :-)

thank you ladies. I am horrified at the idea of some sweet nurse having to deal with me at all...let alone my lady business. Wish me luck and a lazy period arrival date!

I am a nurse who works in surgery and gets patients ready for surgery. Women are always horrified to tell me they have their period when they are told they can't keep their underwear. Trust me, we have seen it all. I know it's awkward for you but it doesn't phase us at all. After you get done with surgery just tell the nurse you need some mesh underwear with a pad. Chances are you'll be a bit loopy from the meds and won't care anyways. After I had a baby, I remember bleeding all over the carpet when they wheeled me from the labor room to my room. I made a blood trail for all to see amd all my co-worker friends had to clean it up. At the time, I felt bad but no one seemed to care and no one talks about it today like it even mattered.

    thank you Nursepatient35

I’m still unhappy but I’ll deal. Poor nurses. They see the grossest stuff. I clearly could never do it. Just doing my drains makes me queasy. Baby steps.
