Hi,

I just had a ultrasound done for rib/breast pain which was actually due to intense workout. The ultrasound had a 4mm*5mm hypoecholic lump with well defined border and oval/elliptical shape in the right breast. It was an incidental discovery as I never felt any lump or pain there except for my regular monthly breast tenderness elsewhere. Doctor mentioned its a fibroadenoma and not to worry. I wanted to get an fnac test done but the doctor mentioned it’s too small a growth to do anything and it’s better to check the status after 6 months. She suggested an ultrasound guided fnac as I am too anxious but chances of picking up cells in this case is minuscule . What do you all suggest? Am 32 years old with no family cancer history

I had one when I was 23. It was huge. They biopsied and removed it. Shaped exactly like an egg. Find someone who will remove if that’s what you feel comfortable doing. Haven’t had a problem until now.

    Best of luck to you

I checked with an interventional radiologist and he suggested not to go ahead with FNA as the grading is BIRAD 2 simple fibroadenoma. He suggested checking every 3-6 months to see if there is an increase in size. What do I do? I have spoken to 4 doctors ( incl my dad who is a doctor) and they all suggest the same thing. Should I still insist and get it done ? I might have to do a surgical biopsy as the nodule seems too small for fine needle aspiration and also because it might keep moving while the doctor is trying to take a sample. I don’t know what to do at this stage.

    Hi Snowgrl,

Although it’s very reassuring to have so many professional opinions, including your own father, at the end of the day you have to go with your own feelings. Personally I tend to follow my gut it rarely lets me down. This is your body so you have to be the final judge. Seeing as you don’t have a malignancy hanging over your head why not take a few days to wrap your head around the whole thing. At that point to can talk to your doctors again to make a plan. Let us know what you decide, best of luck!

my 21 yr old daughter has a fibroadenoma. They watch them for two years checking with ultrasound every 6 mo for 2 yrs. it's not growing. That's what they look for.

So we've been told not to worry about it.

I would not remove it or even attempt to biopsy it at this point. Any damage you do to your breast can cause scarring that could make future mammograms/ultrasounds more difficult to read. If it fits all fibroadenoma criteria and is small, there is no reason to do anything other than monitor it right now.
