Thickening on breast, US tomorrow

Options

Hi all,

It has been a while since I posted, but I still read from time to time.

I've had a thickened area on my cancer breast for months. I first assumed it was related to the implant, but it is slowly getting bigger and can even be seen as elevated skin, sometimes pinker than the surrounding skin. The whole area around it feels weird though, and very unlike the other breast. I had a dbl, skin-sparing mastectomy with silicone implant reconstruction, followed by grafting of nipples.

I saw my oncologist last week. She is usually one to shrug things off (to the point I've wondered if I should see someone else). This time, though, she ordered an ultrasound of both breasts and chest wall... she wanted an MRI but insurance required ultrasound first.

Her reason on my order was "new skin nodularity, risk of recurrence."

Hoping someone in here has had a similar symptom that turned out to be scar tissue (it is near my scar and my nipple graft, but not on them or where you would expect NORMAL scar tissue to develop). Have not had fat grafting.

I am MUCH more worried about another surgery - even just to biopsy - than even having cancer again. I have had 5 major surgeries and did not handle the last one well at all. I am extremely scared of another. Plus, I started a new job 3 months ago and they don't know about my history and do not seem tolerant of time off (and I don't even qualify for paid time off yet). They think I am going in for yearly, routine breast exam tomorrow.

The "lump" is ovalish, but not regular shaped. It is firm. It does not hurt. It does not move. It is maybe 1/2 inch by 1/3 inch... but with other odd areas nearby too.

Thoughts?

How accurate are ultrasound at detecting cancer versus scar tissue versus other benign causes?

ETA: I had "extensive" DCIS throughout 90% of breast and also some LCIS, in addition to a small IDC. My margins were clear. I stopped Tamoxifen after 14 months due to side effects.

I've had a bunch of scar tissue and also a local recurrence. On ultrasound, it can be hard to determine 100%, so do not be surprised if they want to do a biopsy. The time I had a thickening/lump examined by ultrasound, it was indeed scar tissue. Hoping yours is scar tissue as well. I am glad your oncologist is being cautious.

Well... good news. BIRADS 2. Head radiologist even came in to examine me after my US, so I was feeling super happy... until I started replaying our conversation on the drive to work after.

Him: You don't have any breast tissue, it is really just all skin.

Me: So what is the lump then?

Him: I have no idea, but it doesn't really matter what it is because you don't have any tissue left and therefore it isn't breast cancer.

    Me: Is it scar tissue?

Him: No, I don't know what it is. But it doesn't matter. You're good to go.

So, is that 100% true? How do recurrences happen then? If he has no idea what it is, how can he be sure (and he seemed sure) that it is benign? If it is not scar tissue, and it is not fat necrosis (based on comments from the person who performed the full ultrasound), and it is not breast tissue, what is it?

His only other comment was that there seemed to be a "ridge" near the palpable lump.

Thoughts? Could whatever this tissue is (or nontissue) have cancer cells in it? If it is not breast tissue or fat or scar tissue, how is it growing? How did it grow at all?

Should I post these questions in a different place on the forum?

    :(
