Excisional biopsy reveals borderline and ADH?

Hi all,

In case you haven't seen me post before, I'm 21 years old and recently had an excisional biopsy after a core needle biopsy showed ADH in a lump I had. My surgeon removed the lump and I'm in the process of healing, but received the call with my results this evening. My surgeon said that the results showed very atypical cells, and while the pathologists didn't call it cancer, they said it's borderline. So they suggested removing more tissue.

I was just wondering if anyone has had this experience and had it NOT be cancer? I'm honestly freaking out and am a little frustrated because I wish this would all be over.

    ADH and DCIS are quite similar and even very experienced pathologists have trouble making the call between them. With that said the next step up, DCIS, is not invasive and has an excellent prognosis. Many say it is not cancer, but precancer. I hate that you are so unbelievably young. I’m sorry you are dealing with this. Best of luck with whatever it is. I’m very glad the doctors are taking you seriously.

    Thankyou for your response! I do remember my surgeon telling me about the similarities between DCIS and ADH, so you're right in that maybe the pathologists just want to be sure and that's why they want to remove more tissue. I think what frightened me was just knowing that these cells were considered borderline cancerous since I wasn't really expecting that (my surgeon told me the tissue looked fine after my excisional biopsy).
