Cyst with "debris".

hi! I'm 36. I have 4 small children and have been pregnant or breastfeeding for the past 8 1/2 years. My breast have always been lumpy but I didn't think much of it. A girl I went to high school with was diagnosed with breast cancer a year 35, so I started doing self checks... a lot. I'm a still nursing my 14 month old, so sometimes I'm engorged etc.

I mentioned being nervous at my ob check up and he said fibrocystic possibly. He sent me for an ultrasound for "peace of mind" but it has been anything but.

I was a nervous wreck waiting for the ultrasound, so they got me in quick. The breast I was concerned about showed nothing at all! But... they found multiple regular cysts in my left breast and one "cyst with debris". The radiologists said to come back in 6 months. The tech said it was small and just maybe had some blood or something in it, she said don't worry at all.

Well. I'm soooo worried! What is the debris?!

I've lost 40 lbs recently ... changing diet to paleo/keto.

I'm thinking about follow up in 3 months and if it's still there asking for a FNA. Thoughts? Experiences? Thank you.

    First and foremost, keep your appointment for the followup. The fluid in the cyst can be sampled with a fine needle and sent to the lab if 6 months seems too long to wait. Call and ask them about a "cyst aspiration". No reason to worry yet though.

    Here is an excerpt from the article:

    "Complicated cysts are masses that otherwise meet the criteria for simple cysts except that they are not anechoic, that is, they appear at least partially hypoechoic internally (Fig. 22). The internal echoes represent proteins from cell turn-over, hemorrhage, or pus, and such proteins can be collectively termed debris."

    thank you so much for your response. I really appreciate it. I will look at the article. I haven't seen much about people having "debris" in a cyst. I am very natural minded and I read about taking supplements that might help with cysts. I plan to take iodine and make sure my vitamin d is in a good range.

    They will send the report to my dr, so I will ask him if I can go ahead with the FNA. Thank you.

    I saw it every day in my practice. It's not mentioned much because it is a normal finding in older cysts.

    Make sure they send the aspirate to the lab to reassure you.

    thank you. I spoke with a nurse today and she was reading over my report (which I will pick up later today) and she said something like "4 mm mass at 9:00 consistent with cyst with hemmorhagic and debris"

    May not be exact wording but the hemmorhagic part scares me. What does that mean? I'm breastfeeding... anything to do with that? They don't seem concerned ... they said I can see a specialist if I want a 2nd opinion. Waiting for them to call me now.

    At 4 mm it would be difficult to tell exactly what the material was inside a cyst that small. The only way to tell is to aspirate it or use a biopsy device to just remove the whole thing. Sometimes a cyst is just a cyst, but if it was anything to worry about this would be about the earliest one could have found it.

    Hi again! Thank you so much for the wonderful info. I saw a breast oncologist/surgeon today. He looked at the report and images and said he was very "unconcerned" He didn't say what he thought it was..just that it wasn't "impressive" He was showing me the images of the 2 simples cysts and showed how the blood flow was outside those. Then he came to the cyst in question and it showed some blue blood flow to the cyst. I asked about it and he said blood flows all over the breast. Can you explain that more and what makes blood flow to a mass "bad"? I am supposed to go back in 6 months. Here is the actual report findings "4 mm hypoechoic mass is present in the 1:00 with internal echoes. This probably represents a cyst with internal debris/hemorrhage." BI-RADS 3

    Should i stop worrying now that 2 doctors have said they aren't concerned? He didn't want to biopsy it. He said it's so small and I'm also breastfeeding. I really don't want a biopsy...so i guess i should just be happy.
