Taxotere stopped - treatment center closed at 6 pm

hi,

My apologies if I sound cranky

My 2 pm chemo was moved because they had 3 emergencies come up yesterday. All the nurse could talk about was how they close at 6 and she didn’t know how this going to work.

My condition prior was quite amped. The dexamethasone made my stomach angry. I begged for Tagamet at 1 pm finally receive it at 5 pm after treatment was halted. And I’m jumpy. It was awful.

Ok so pre-meds are fine, Taxotere is added. I cough. I was confused and tried to clear it but the nurse stopped it immediately. She was waiting for it to happen. So now Benadryl is shot in and more dexamethasine and a 15 minute wait. Re-started it’s going well. I’m tired now wanting to sleep and jump up at the same time. But tolerating it. Dose is increased flushing begins, blood pressure skyrockets, throat begins closing. Treatment halted.

But hey they were able to stop the treatment in time so the center could close promptly at 6. Never mind I have a short, very short window for treatment post surgery before having treatment won’t be an option.

    Tracy - I'm very sorry about the ordeal you went through. This was your first treatment?

    I suspect that the combination of steroids and anxiety coupled with frustration was a really bad mix. That said - infusion reactions are quite scary for both the patient and the staff.

    You'll need to discuss this with your MO. They may try again with the Taxotere, very slowly. Or they may decide to move on to another chemo drug instead.

    Thankfully - you're okay now. And, while they do push to get chemo started within a window after surgery, the fact that you had the breast with cancer removed and no positive nodes is great!

    could be th Adrenalin in me but I didn’t/don’t feel scared. I wanted to continue . But I need to have compassion for all of the pressure my caregivers were under yesterday. It’s hard to remember that when you are amped on dexamethasone.

    I’m grateful for clear margins and and sentinel node.

    I believe there was a pharmacy snafu on Friday.

    I think I was given a bad batch or the med given was Taxol/ Carboplatin. There were 2 otheremergencies on the unit when this occurred.

    re-challenged today and no problems at all. Famotidine was added. Not sure why it was to not given Friday since I reported stomach distress repeatedly caused by the dexamasone.

    Glad it went well today and hope things progress normally from here on out!

    I had horrible stomach issues from ? during my chemo and ended up taking Omeprazole (prescription) and using Carafate. That helped immensely.

    1.Always look at your bag..always. And don’t two people check it? Always ask exactly what you are getting with each injection. So glad you did better

    I’m glad you did ok with the second dose. Hate the steroids...I’m back on after an infusion reaction...after 3.5 years on Herceptin and Perjeta. Guess that’s why I’m posting at 309 am.

    Hope you are resting. The patient website listed taxol/Carboplatin which was wrong and the nurse gave me taxol instructions so things seemed amiss. But weds was fine so I just hope that’s how it goes in thorn future

    How often are you getting infusions? If weekly, you should be receiving Taxol as Taxotere is not dosed weekly, but infusions that are 21 days apart.

    I am not sure I am understanding what happened here. However, due to the confusion and possibility of error, please promptly ask your Medical Oncologist to review what occurred, and to review the current orders and to confirm to you that they comport with the precise regimen he intended you to receive (e.g., specific drugs, concentrations, frequency of administration). With confirmation of the intended regimen in hand, Beatmon's recommendations to check the drugs prior to each administration is a very good one.

    hi Guys,

    I myself don't know what happened. But I will look into it because it was quite strange to go from an allergic reaction to no problem at all the very next time. But it could have just been the addition of famotidine.

    The bag was checked but as I said the paperwork did not match to the electronic patient record.

    I don’t mean to create a bunch of stress here. I had my treatment on Wednesday and it was smooth and uneventful (Taxotere and cysphosamide). I also had an ultrasound on my heart.

    Sorry I don't have more answers.
