Doctor freaking out over lumps. Help? Experiences?

Hello everyone! I discovered these threads while looking through the dreaded Google land of crazy information. Everyone seems really supportive and informative, so I'm hoping someone might have some ideas. For the last couple of months I've been feeling insanely exhausted, no appetite, a few fevers here and there. I started noticing some chest discomfort a month ago, and felt a few lumps under my collar bone and above my left breast. About 6 months ago my right breast had swollen to three times the size with slight discharge , but everything checked out okay. I finally made an appointment to get the left lump area checked out since they weren't going away. One feels solid and unmovable. The other a funky shape, but movable. There's a slight pain around them, but not the lumps directly. The doctor felt around for about two minutes today and instantly became worried. She found more masses, one under my armpit as well. She kept saying here's something, and what's this. This doesn't feel good. And the lymph nodes are swollen all around the lumps. She suddenly said we're done you need tests right away. She sent me to the lab and for a chest X-ray. I have a mammogram and ultrasound in the morning. She said you need to know I'm checking for cancer, but that was it. Now I'm slightly freaking out. I don't know what to expect or what questions I should be asking. I know she's done a CBC, and wrote left breast ttp after my X-ray, but no Call to explain. Any ideas lovely people?

Anyone in your family have an autoimmune disorder ? Parents, aunts, uncles etc.
-
Not that I'm aware of. The only issues I know of ar heart disease and ovarian cancer
-
brief update. They didn't do the mammogram because I'm only 27The only thing they mentioned from the ultrasound was a 4 cm swollen lymph node in the auxiliary area. Waiting for my pcm to give me a call. Not sure what I should ask
-
Hi Katie, just wondering what next steps are for you? Do they plan on doing a biopsy? At minimum I would say this needs to be done.
-
I'm still waiting to hear from the doctor. Hopefully soon! I should also have my chest xray results and my cbc today. I am planning on bringing up a biopsy. I think I would feel more comfortable if it was done. It's hard to not feel nervous.
*the doctor never called. I know they had my blood test results. I was hoping to at least hear if there was a sign of infection or not. Hopefully Monday will bring some news
-
If you have an abnormal lymph node under your arm and no mass in either breast, the blood work and/or the chest film may have your answer.
-
that would be really nice, just to have an idea. Thanks for all your responses
-
Perhaps they can do an MRI
-
I've read a little bit about different imaging and what to expect. Do you have some ideas about what the MRI could be useful for showing that I could discuss with my doctor? I was going to ask if it's a possibility to get one. I'm not sure the best route to go. The guy doing he imaging said the lymph node was slightly large, and looked slightly odd, but that it was fine because I'm only 27 and they didn't notice any thing in The left part of my breast that they looked at. Kind of dismissive, but maybe I'm overreacting
-
I'm wondering if I should ask for more imaging, or just leave it be. They said that the lymph node being swollen is from being sick 2 months ago probably. But it hasn't been decreasing, it's been increasing. Also my blood work is normal, except for my mpv count being a little high, at 11.7. Not anything crazy. WBC normal etc. Everything else is in typical range. Am I just being paranoid at this point?
-
Did they do an ultrasound of that lymph node or just a physical exam? Mammogram? You also mentioned they would do a chest x-ray, have they done that yet? Do you have any of the imaging reports you could post?
What is key here is if that one node is truly abnormal, are there any other abnormal nodes anywhere else in the body. If yes then one would think a systemic problem though less likely with a normal white count. Fevers, chills, night sweats? If isolated then think breast or upper extremity on that side. Scratched by a cat? Injury or infection?
What did your doctor say about the high MPV? Any problems in the past with your platelets like abnormal bleeding? What do your doctors think is causing this finding?
-
They did the ultrasound and the X-ray. The radiologist only said my left auxiliary lymph node was 4cm and looked slightly abnormal. However the nurse that called today said the doctor said all of my reports in that aspect we’re normal. I’m waiting on copies to see the full reports. They didn’t do the mammogram , because they said I’m too young.
She noted hard nodules under my collarbone and other abnormalities during my exam, and then mentioned the lymph node under my arm felt hard and fixed. No cat scratches or injuries. I do work at a school with special needs children, and sometimes get scratched. However nothing on my left arm has happened. What made me go in was no appetitie and extreme exhaustion for over a month. And then when feeling my chest one night I noticed what i perceived as hard lumps. Maybe 1/3 the size of my pinky. I had a cold a little over 2 months ago
No history of such things. She said it is unexplained and has no idea. Then said to come back in a month if I feel the need for a check u

They do a Mono Spot test? I had mono early in life and I can clearly remember the extreme exhaustion.
Also when you get your reports look for a description of that lymph node. Although 4 cm is large for a node, the key measurement is the thickness of it's cortex.
Keep us in the loop as your docs continue to investigate.
-
I’m going to ask about a mono spot test. I don’t see why not. Might as well cover the bases. My PCM is a base doctor. I think I’m going to ask to see my gynecologist and see how she feels about everything. At least I can have a second opinion that’s in network.
Hoping to get copies of my reports tomorrow.
Thank you so much for responding to my questions. This has been a really frustrating experience, so I greatly appreciate it.
Just want to make sure they are checking into it. I’m sure it’s fine, but a lot of women in my family have been diagnosed with at least ovarian cancer before 35, so I want to be proactive about my health.
-
I can’t seem to get my hand in the reports. Hopefully the women’s center that did my ultrasound can help out. I found two other very hard...double pea sized lumps in my right breast. Apparently my body has decided to rebel against me 🙂 I’m looking for a fatty hilum is that correct?
My PCM has all wrong information in my file. She said I had the flu two weeks ago... which I didn’t. And a dog bite also two weeks Gowhich also didn’t happen. But she did have labs ordered for mono, lymes disease, toxoplasmosis, and a cmv I believe. So at least all of that is getting covered.
-
Those sound like all the appropriate lab tests.
Yes, you are looking for compression / effacement / displacement of the fatty hilum by a thickened cortex. A normal node can be very large and have a very thin cortex, and vice versa.
-
thank you so much for your reassurance and information! Hope you have a wonderful day

so they've ruled out infection and sickness for my lymphnodes. The doctor felt a very hard and concerning ,as she said, lump in my right breast that I hadn’t noticed, the one that had swelling beforeand slight discharge. I’m trying not to think of the hard scenarios, because Ininow most stuff is benign. But my breasts have just been getting worse over the last year. First the right, then the lymphnodes and the breast in the left, and now the lump that is weird on the right. I can’t even wear a normal bra anymore because it’s so uncomfortable I see a breast surgeon on Monday. So here's to hoping that it's something silly and easy!
-
Hi Katie, I have been following along - I'm glad you are seeing a breast surgeon on Monday. Hopefully they can do some tests and get some answers. I was diagnosed young at 32, and I am always worried about younger ladies being missed because of our age. Still, I hope it's something silly and easy, like you said. Keep us posted.
-
thanks for the good thoughts! It’s been tough for anyone to take my concerns seriously for the last year. I’m nervous about what I feel now that it’s worse , but I’m glad too that I’m seeing the doctor tomorrow! Definitely trying to be realistic and positive. Fingers crossed for answers. And I amSending you well wishes on your journey!

so the physicians assistant I saw today said that I have thickening in my right breast. She didn't expand on this, but my understanding from google is that majority of the time that is nothing to be concerned about. She felt the left and felt one of the lumps I mentioned and said it's probably a lymph node. I asked her about my enlarged lymph nodes. She blatantly refused to examine any of them and said I probably just have bigger lymph nodes then other people. Then she literally ignored my other questions and concerns and said well you are 27 so its probably hormones. She did schedule an ultrasound for my right breast. It's frustrating because I feel like the couple times I have been seen for this, I have been totally disregarded mostly because of my age. I understand how it is most likely not breast cancer, and that it could be many other things. I'm just nervous because everything has just been getting worse with my breasts, and I feel like no one takes me seriously or bothers to answer my questions. If they were to say we know it's not this because of a,b,c etc. I would feel a lot better. Not just well, we're not sure, but you're only 27 so it's probably fine. Unless I'm being ridiculous, which is definitely possible since I do feel anxious. I just haven't felt right for awhile now. I'd like to have the energy again to get through my day, a normal appetite, and breasts that don't keep changing in ways that make me nervous and leave me constantly uncomfortable. I also feel weird about how they were nervous about my lymph nodes for one moment, and now have totally disregarded them even though they said that they shouldn't be swollen from a sickness so long ago, and there's no sign of infection, negative for mono etc.
I'm hoping the ultrasound on the right tomorrow has some explanation, hopefully a very simple one, for all of the issues I've been having. But I should be glad that nothing has jumped out so far that was definitely bad.

I was also told there is no need for a biopsy of the largest lymph node the found, and that I was there for a breast exam and once again she had no concern for my lymph nodes despite multiple changes in my breasts and no decrease in the size of lymph nodes (I’ve been tryingto circle with a pen)

Hi Katie,
I read your story and felt compelled to reach out to share my experience. I was diagnosed with BC at 29 years old. I was blown off for one year after presenting to my doctor with a large lymph node under my arm. I trusted the doctor because I didn’t know better. Little did I know that breast tissue extends under the arm. The lump kept getting larger and I ultimately demanded it be taken out. I was devastated to learn that I had BC because I had been told I was too young. That was 21 years ago. If something troubles you, please proceed to do whatever you need to do to rest assured that your condition is not BC. I was very fortunate. Wishing you all the best.
-
I agree with Rhonda - better safe than sorry with this disease. My doctor didn't biopsy my recurrence lump for nine months. I also trusted her and didn't know any better then, but meanwhile it spread to my lymph nodes. One thing I have learned is to be my own advocate, and if one person won't help you, find someone who will. Keep us posted. ((Hugs))
-
Thank you so much for reaching out Rhonda and buttonsmachine. It makes me feel less crazy for wanting to get this figured out. I'm sorry that you have both had those experiences. I talked to the radiologist after my ultrasound. He said that they can feel where the tissue is very hard and fixed in my breast , but he didn't have an conclusive answer from the ultrasound. He only noted that he knows it's not from a cyst, abscess, or something of that nature. I'm hoping that they will do an MRI now. I see the doctor again on Friday, so I suppose we will see what she says.
-
MRI is scheduled. It’s been a busy time, but I’m ready for some peace of mind or to at least get an answer and be ready to tackle a problem.
-
Great news Katie!
I have an MRI scheduled for Monday as I have a recent inconclusive ultrasound. There is a lesion near my scar which may be scar tissue and there is another lesion that may be fat necrosis, I hope. Since I have had cancer before, they are giving me the full work up to be sure that there is no recurrence after 21 years. Please keep me in prayer and I will do the same for you
-
Thank you so much. I feel better knowing that it’s in place now.
I’m hoping for you too, and will say some prayers for you.Sending hugs and good thoughts to get you through the worries!
