Funny you should post this now. I had DCIS two years ago and had a biopsy on the other side yesterday. Waiting to hear results. . .

sorry to hear! How are you doing? Radiologist saw two spots on same side as my dcis. One calcification and other some tissue. My dr doesn't see much change and talked to the radiologist but he wants to do the biopsies. I guess this happens when you're watched closely. I had lumpectomy two years ago. No radiation. I'm on tamoxifen. And I also have adh.

I had ALH about eight years ago, then the DCIS (lumpectomy + radiation, no tamoxifen because it was hormone receptor negative), now whatever this is. Just anxious to get the call and figure out what comes next. :-(

Sorry--if that was for me, then yes. I had my regular six-month mammo last week, the radiologist saw something on the contralateral side, took some more pictures, then came and told me there were some calcs but he didn't think they looked suspicious. I also had my regular six-month appt with my BS on Tuesday. He did an ultrasound, said he didn't like what he saw, and did the biopsy right there in the office. I also have my regular six-month check in with my RO this morning. I'm thinking if I haven't heard by the time I see her I'm going to ask if she can find out the results. It's been a weird week. Hubs was out of town until late last night and is leaving again this afternoon for his 60th birthday vacation. I haven't told him yet. Figure I'll wait until I know what's what, and I really do not want to ruin his trip.

So my RO walked in with the pathology report (and my BS is not happy--he called someone in that department and chewed him out--preliminary report was available the day after the biopsy, more information added the next day, and even the day after that they had not sent him the report). Anyway--I had the talk with my RO that normally happens with the BS. It is IDC, ER+, PR+, HER still undetermined--they're doing that FISH thing. They think Stage 1 but I guess I won't know til after the surgery. The RO did an exam and I went over to the BS's office and he did an ultrasound and they think the lymph nodes are probably okay, but I guess they have to biopsy the sentinel node. I am not happy about that. Surgery scheduled for 3/13. I'll do a lumpectomy + rads. This has been such a weird few days (we were without power the whole weekend, which just added to it). I won't tell my husband til he comes home Saturday night. Just. . . weird.

sorry to hear. So was the area that came back IDC from the calcifications or other spot? Are they giving you option of mastectomy??

Robinda yes--where the calcifications were. Yes MX was on the table--same as last time, but I am not going that route until it's the only option.

Im sure it’s esrly stage if it appeared as calcifications. Good luck with the surgery. At least you know what to expect.

Thanks so much, and that's what I'm hoping! And yes I do, although it's funny how many of the details your brain blocks out. I was up at 3:00 this morning googling what kind of bra to wear to the lumpectomy.

Has anyone had onco testing done on their pathology? I am interested in this even though my mastectomy was 1 yr ago. My friend had the same raRE Pagets with DCIS and had a mastectomy. Was having pain on healthy breast, MRI showed a suspicious area. They rechecked in 6 mo. All good except on the DCIS, mastectomy side... was a mass. IDC?! Lumpectomy, chemo, rads. This scared me. :( back in the house of fear.

I want a surveillance MRI now. She never would have found it if she didn’t go in for left breast issue

Scheduled tomorrow Morning for yet another lumpectomy in Same breast of DCIS found 16 months ago. Had 33 rads and 3 previous lumpectomies and on Tamoxifen for 10 months. Don’t remember anyone discussing a possible reaccurance after radiation. Seems I have a cluster of calcifications on outside rim of previous DCIS clean margin. A bit scared and dreading the pain and recover

Sorry to hear you have a recurrence, and I hope everything goes okay tomorrow. But did you have 3 lumpectomies to remove a 1cm cancer? Was there a problem getting clear margins?

This is such a rollercoaster,, and none of us bought a ticket. Sending you a hug.

PBinKC - my nightmare. I had two lumpectomies and still .02mm dirty margin with no more breast tissue left to take. I have been very upset by this, as there are differing opinions on what to do to get a clear margin. Johns Hopkins said they would go in for a 3rd surgery even if it meant taking tissue. My surgeon disagrees. But the thing that really ticks me off is: HOW CAN DCIS CELLS BE LIVING WHERE THERE IS NO LONGER A DUCT? I cannot get a straight answer. Some of the people in the March Radiation Group and Feb Surgeries have said their doctors are not concerned because DCIS cells cannot live outside of a duct - but it that's so, what's with the dirty margin? Can you ask them if it is a recurrence or a new duct? Can they answer the "outside the duct" question? I feel for you, sister - I have a friend who just had a two-year-out recurrence. I am about to head into radiation, then hormone therapy - a decision I made over mastectomy because the prognosis were the same and the risk of recurrence was so low. My doc used a computer-guided software program from Sloan-Kettering to assess the risk of recurrence.

Dizzybee - just to chime in: I had two surgeries to get what was originally thought to be 2.9 mm of DCIS. Second biopsy results were positive for 1.5 CM of DCIS, plus .02mm dirty margin. I was crushed, but my surgeon said it was just skin, where DCIS cannot live, and no more surgery - just the rads and hormone therapy. So I can see how multiple lumpectomies could happen. It does seem like a little bit, thought. Still, the question about margins and ability of DCIS to live on skin preys on me!
