    Hi,

Tomorrow will be one week after my first chemo. Everyday had been a different problem. Now the inside of my mouth feels like I have a rash and my top lip is chapped. I’ve been gargling with baking soda but was wondering if there’s something better to use.

    Thank you,

    Lisa

Take a flashlight and look in the mirror to see if you have thrush. It's an opportunistic fungal infection, very common during chemo. It causes a white coating and white spots on the tongue, mouth, and throat. It cannot be brushed or scratched off. If it's thrush, there is medication that will kill it off.

Check with your MO, he can rx Magic Mouthwash. It really helps. Or take care if it’s thrush.

sorry you are experiencing mouth issues during chemo. Last year while undergoing 20 weeks of chemo, I did have mouth sores from Taxol. My insurance would not cover the magic mouthwash and it was expensive so I didn’t fill the RX. I did gargle with water, salt, and baking soda after eating anything and applied Blistex’s KankA Aid on the sores themselves. It helped me a bunch.

Be careful about what you eat-nothing that can tear your skin in your mouth (chips, dry crackers), avoid spicy foods. Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash instead of regular, and I used a toothbrush with a really small head so it would just hit my teeth and not the inside of my mouth. Mouth sore queen here.

For brushing teeth - they make these little sponges on sticks called "toothettes" that work really well when your mouth is a mess!

I’m so sorry you are going through this too. It’s not fun. I ended up having thrush. It’s getting better but it’s hard to eat anything because everything tastes horrible. It’s never ending.
