low hemoglobin

Has anyone had to get a blood transfusion after a mastectomy or before?  Is it safe?

  My red cells were off (though I didn't feel anemic). I needed iron infusions--5 treatments, before surgery. I'm not sure why you're looking at a transfusion rather than iron.
