I have a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound scheduled for Tuesday. The doctor had found a lump that moves, is soft and she didn’t seem concerned. She asked if I’ve always had it. I wasn’t too sure. I called and requested an ultrasound. She decided to schedule a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. Could this mean she’s expecting something worse? I’m only 26 and I’m very worried and scared

It sounds as though your doctor is just being thorough.

From the description of your lump (mobile, soft), your age, and the doctor's reaction (“she didn't seem concerned), it's likely that this lump will be either a fibroadenoma or a cyst, both very common and both harmless. I've had two fibroadenomas, one at 16 and one at 20, and more cysts than I can remember. Or your lump might just be normal lumpy breast tissue - I have that too and my breasts have always felt lumpy.

It's a natural reaction to be scared, but most breast lumps turn out to be benign and harmless. Try not to worry. And good luck on Tuesday.

kb2009. I totally agree with beesie. Sending you for imaging means nothing, just standard procedure. I'd feel the doctor is negligent if she/he didn't requisition images

I’m not a doctor and I wouldn’t want to assume I know what your doctor is expecting. But I had bilateral diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds every 6 months for 2 years. The way I understand it is that mammograms and ultrasounds pick up different things. I had mammograms to follow my calcifications and ultrasounds to follow cysts. My ultrasounds took longer than my mammograms. Since she doesn’t know what it is, she may be scheduling bothtests to reserve the time for both in case you need it, so you don’t have to come back. When i had diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds done, the radiologist always gave me my results that day. Hopefully someone else will jump in with comments.

Usually the US will answer the question in your age group but every now and then a mammogram is needed to clarify what is seen on the US. It helps a great deal to have it ordered ahead of time in case it is needed otherwise the techs run around calling and faxing trying to get an order for the US and it takes forever and delays everything. Our diagnostic request forms were set up so that everything up to and including a biopsy would already be ordered so if needed it could be scheduled or performed same day without all the phone calls. All that to say the mammo order is probably one of convenience, the mammo may not be needed and may not be performed.

I went in for my ultrasound and mammogram today. They informed me that the radiologist didn’t see anything from looking it over quickly. But he will take a further look into it. I saw an image the tech took on the mammogram and didn’t feel comfortable with it. But if the radiologist said it was ok for now, I’ll just wait for the confirmation call giving me the all clear. Thank you all for the advice!

"I saw an image the tech took on the mammogram and didn't feel comfortable with it"

    What did that image show?
