Hormone Disrupting Chemicals-Do You Avoid and How?

The organic bamboo sheets sounded so lovely I went in search of a set on the Internet. I was surprised to learn that bamboo sheets are really rayon (chemically altered bamboo fibers) and not as eco-friendly as thought. Is this information correct? Or where can you buy truly organic bamboo sheets? http://www.today.com/money/feds-claim-bamboo-fabric-was-really-rayon-1B7877887

interesting. but rayon is about my all-time favorite fabric. I have 2 caftans I bough here when I first arrifed in 1974. at the then dept store. for not much, perhaps 15 dollars each but really can't remember. I've worn the red print one very seldom & it's pretty pristine now after 41 years. the blue print one O've worn often. It's fairly worn out but still wearable. rayon is made from plants. it washes well and dries quickly.

English, ok, thanks for the explanation. I get cotton sheets easily enough at Ikea. It is hard for me to imagine sleeping on anything else.

Ceanna,I think that would work replacing the almonds with cashews - Am I right in thinking you don't have to strain the cashews as they fully blend? Please let me know if you try it, I am always looking for alternatives...
As far as the bamboo sheets, I had not read that before but that was why I inserted the waiver of *supposedly*....I never know what to believe anymore or who is spinning a line
I would say it is likely true - My friend was saying that they make it with the lyocell method now - they say it is less toxic for the mashing/pulping part but I have not read up on it so that is hearsay (from someone in the industry but still.....) I likely got duped on my childrens sheets, that sucks....but thanks for bringing to my attention. I will say they are still beautifully soft and still look lovely at 8 years...
I checked out my own sheets and they say ' 100% Organic Bamboo Linen - Mechanically made'. They were from a boutique in California and were discounted down as they were going out of business. My hubby reminded me that at the time the owner told me, "you'll never find sheets like that again for that price..."
A tip for washing new sheets or clothes: 1/2 cup of powdered milk in with the new items in the washer and 1/2 cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle is supposed to remove the 'dressing' and chemicals. My brother in law has terrible skin issues/skin allergies and this was told to him by the dermatologist at the Mayo clinic, many years ago. I use it, again, I have no way of knowing if it really works except my eldest used to get eczema and if I don't wash her new things this way she gets really itching.

hi Ceanna,
Since i was diagnosed i have been seeing a natropath and other natural therapy practitioners. They advised me to delete all hormone disrupting chemicals from my home. I couldn't believe how many there are around us everyday!
I replaced the cleaning products with water & white vinegar or water with essential oils.
I stopped using plastic - bought glass bottles only. I also changed my water filter to glass (even though it was pba free plastic, glass is preferable).
I noticed that i had been using alot of plastic containers to store food in the fridge and freezer. So i replaced them with glass / ceramic or pyrex bowls.
hair conditioner - i now use a brand called organic care
deodorant - it was hard to find a good one but i've settled on 'moo goo' which is aluminium free
tin food - i dont buy much tinned foods but i did buy tinned tomatoes. These tins are often lined with a form of plastic - which is hormone disrupting. The acid in the tomatoes causes it to seep into the food. So i had to find either tomatoes in jars or brands that were not lined with the white plastic and were just the plain tin
Another thing i have been doing daily is a table spoon of freshly ground flaxseeds - i have it sprinkled over tomatoes and avocado. I was told this helps mop up excess estrogens, which is great if your estrogen positive.
I also have a mainly plant based diet with a small amount of lamb, eggs, fish.
I found at first alot of these changes seemed to be lots of additional costs but after a while things like the cleaning products in fact became less costly than regular products - not to mention they smell better!
I have also noticed that now if i am around regular cleaning products - they are just too strong and chemically to me.
