Feel I'm being fobbed off
Hi there.
I'm a 36yr old female. I had a lump removed in 2002 as the needle aspiration test was inconclusive so the Dr deemed it to be borderline between malignant and benign. Since then I have had the Hadfield procedure to remove all milk ducts from both breast due to bleeding and fluid leakage. Both came back benign.
My maternal aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer of the milk duct and carries the hereditary gene.
I have just been to a breast cancer screening as I found a lump behind my nipple on Christmas Day. (It's taken this long to be seen)
My GP wanted them to do a mammogram and the blood test for screening of the hereditary gene. The Dr I just seen refused both. He sent me for an ultrasound and told me it was probably just scar tissue from previous surgery. I said I wasn't so sure as my surgery of that area was in 2008/9 and this is a new change. I feel like he didn't want to help.
I went for the ultrasound and the sonographer found a lump and is not convinced that this is just scar tissue. She has requested a second opinion. She wants me to see a radiologist and to have a further needle aspiration test. I got sent back up to the clinic to discuss the findings with the Dr. He said that he doesn't feel it needs a second opinion but will speak to the radiologist but will probably write to me to discharge me.
I think with my history and my aunt's that they should be doing these tests to eliminate the possibility that I have breast cancer. If I get discharged I what have to wait until I find another lump in which case my best chance of treatment could be too late.
I have a 12yr old daughter to also consider, if I have the gene she could have it too?
Don't know what to do and I'm more worried now than when I arrived at the hospital this morning. These appointments are meant to put you mind at rest.
Any ideas what to do now?

can’t you get a second opinion? Sounds like however refused both is not a good fit. Send this to our Radiologist for advise

Smorie, because you said GP, are you in somewhere other than the US?

Who is the doctor that is refusing to move forward & wants to discharge you? Is it a breast sugeon? If so, I'd ask your GP to give you a referral to another oncology surgeon for a second opinion.
I think you should have that lump aspirated/biopsied at least. -
Yes I'm in the UK. Didn't realise this wasn't a UK forum.
The Dr is a UK breast surgeon who refused to do the tests my GP requested.

I did my extended panel genetic testing through Color.com. It is $249 self pay, self administered. I just took a look at the drop down box for places they deliver the kit and it showed the UK as an option. Might be worth checking into. After the test you are allowed a call with a genetic couselor to go over things. This alone is worth the $249 in my mind.

Sorry, it's not that the forum is specific to any one country, but what you can do when running into problems like this varies by country because the payer system varies. Do you have the opportunity to ask for a second opinion? If the doc to whom you were referred refused to do tests requested by the GP, the GP is probably not too happy about it either. If that were the case here, where most insurance does cover a second opinion, you'd ask your GP to refer you to someone else, but you wouldn't have to start at square 1 because you could bring your records (including your scan - the images) when you see that person. Is anything like that at all an option for you?
