Writing this for my sister

Hello,

My sister was dxed with DCIS in one spot. The treatment was to be lumpectomy with 6 weeks of daily radiation. After having an MRI last Tue, they said she has another area that is most likely DCIS too. (One at the 5:00 position & one at 12:00.).

After googling this she's now wondering if she should just have a mastectomy on that side? They will be doing a biopsy of the other area this week.

This does run in our family. My mom, my aunt and myself. All 3 of us er/pr+ stage one. I opted for double mastectomy for peace of mind. I was 48 when diagnosed & thankfully no recurance 12 yrs later. My mom is ok too (Diagnosed at 55) & my aunt died of something else.My sister is 55.

Appreciate any feedback.

Hi there Julel. Others may have a different opinion, but I think it depends on whether they find additional DCIS and how large it is. Some women do just fine with a second lumpectomy + radiation. But whatever gives her peace of mind will be best. Good luck to all of you.

I agree that it is a very personal decision depending upon her tolerance for risk. For me, especially with your family history, I would be having a mastectomy.

Yes, I agree a mastectomy would not be unreasonable at all given our family history.
