Hematoma vs Seroma

I made the mistake of going to the surgeon's office only to see the nurse practitioner. She insisted the lump that the surgeon drained is now a hematoma. I disagreed with her because it feels the exact same as before the surgeon drained it, and I requested to see the surgeon next week. My question of the surgeon is how often should a seroma be drained? I don't want an infection like last time, however I don't want this painful lump in my arm pit either.

I'm pretty sure that hematoma's aren't drained like seromas?

I had a hematoma after my lumpectomy- surgeon drained it twice, and could have done so again, but then I had more surgery!

It was not painful, but it was a pain in that it delayed healing and there was all that swelling...

    Hi Chiarara,

Thanks for the information about hematomas. Glad yours was able to be drained and wasn't painful. That NP I saw was wrong on every front. I'll see the surgeon next but I feel this is a seroma.

They tried to drain my biopsy induced hematoma during my lumpectomy surgery (three days after biopsy), and couldn't drain it. Apparently the blood had already thickened too much. I had to wait it out for it to dissolve, took a few months.

    gb2115,

I never thought about that happening, sorry you had to wait for it to resolve itself. I'm pretty sure this is a seroma with lymph fluid not a hematoma but I'll let the surgeon tell me. I don't go in until the 26th.

I got a hematoma in early December when they took out my port. It is tender some days but it is smaller now.

Hope you surgeon can help you Veeder14.

I had a BMX on the 29th and had to go in for emergency surgery the next day to evacuate a huge hematoma from my nonaffected left armpit. Since the surgery, no pain. Good Luck
