Meg101, I’m not sure if it’s the boosts that cause the reaction ... the tech today told me the impact should be minimal. I’ve also read that most of the skin breakdown comes the last two weeks, as your insides are “cooking.” That timing coincides with the boosts, but it may not be causation.

Ladies.... Coming up on Friday!!
After just 1 week, I was swollen last Friday like some of you are describing. My breast seemed like it was going to pop! I bought a compression bra from a mastectomy shop and wore it to bed then sports bra during the day. My RO told me to do 800 mg of ibuprofen 3x a day and to use ice. It's still swollen (they had to redo my numbers today's grrr) but so much more bearable. I found the less movement, the less swelling. When I'm out and about, I've been putting my purse from bad side shoulder to good side hip and use the strap as an anchor for my bad side hand so breast is supported and I don't look obscene. Although my sister pointed out that guys fix their crotch all the time and don't worry how it looks 😉.
Tomorrow marks my halfway point!! You ladies that are already done are an inspiration...
-
I finished radiation Feb 07th on my left breast. Now the skin is peeling off. I also feela lot of itching in the peeled areas. Any home remedy I could use? Thanks in advance...
-
Well done Belle and Bea. You are making progress. My breast swelled terribly with orange peel skin and ridges. I’ve been going to physio except for my last week of rads as my boob was too tender. I’ve been doing lymphatic drainage massage myself gently during rads but it hasn’t helped much yet. I agree movement seems to agrivate the swelling and discomfort.
Hang in there ladies.
-
Bea, I used cortisone with aquaphor on top for itching and peeling. It's messy so wear and old tshirt
-
Complete radiation therapy on Wednesday ... Check!
See surgeon for port removal on Thursday ... Check!
File income tax returns on Friday ... Check!
It feels so good to get things checked off the "To Do" list! :-)
Wishing everyone a wonderful and relaxing weekend!
-
Katiejane and Tpralph, Congratulations on finishing!!! Yippee!!
Bea, I am not itching (yet) but most folks on this site recommend hydrocortisone cream for that. If OTC 1% doesn't do the trick, you can get a Rx for a stronger cream. Good luck, I absolutely hate anything that itches. I live in a mosquito paradise and should be used to it, but I'm not!
OK, ladies, I may have found my silver bullet for swelling and TDN (that darn nipple) pain - the cabbage leaves really have worked! I rinse 2 leaves and put them in the freezer. When they get really cold (?5min), I take them out and apply to my breast under my bra. Feels super cold at first but quickly melds into my shape and I leave them on until they are warm. I have done this for the last 2 evenings, and my swelling is a little better but the discomfort is MUCH better, and no Advil all day!
Happy Friday and have a great rads free weekend!
-
Whoa, Hershey, what a fantastic week for you! Way to go!
-
HersheyKiss- great job. I’ve got to admit I get a little teary eyed when I read that some one has finished their rads. 3 more boosts and I’ll be done. I’m red, swollen and very sore, but we have a 3 day weekend to heal!
-
DownNot Out- I’m buying a head of cabbage and trying this tonight!
Thanks.
-
thanks Down and Out and congrats Katie. Whoo hooo, we made it to and past the finish line! I was wondering how i would feel about being done all active treatment and was worried that i may be depressed as some do....but...nope. Feel pretty darn excited. I still have stage 2 of my diep to do. That makes me a bit nervous. Will see the PS next month to discuss it. I hear he is about 6 months out for surgery stage two.
Pretty red in the axilla area and feels swollen at night. better in am. infection at scar site better but still putting polysporin on it. the Glaxol base feels so nice when i apply .
Cabbage leaves are a great idea , just be careful how cold they are as they suggest no extremes in temperature on the radiated skin.
-
DownNot Out-the frozen cabbage leaves feel heavenly! I put one on over the pads holding the ointments on me. Thanks.
-
I rang the bell on Wednesday I am done! I'm amazed how much my skin is healing already. Under my arm was pretty sore and peeling. My collarbone area was very sore as well. But after just two days of rest and hydrogel pads, things are feeling better. So hang in there ladies. It will get better!
Now on to Tamoxifen!
-
Great job Mama1416
-
Congrats to all those who finished! And to those soon finishing up with boosts, there is light at the end of the tunnel!
Enjoy the 3 day weekend with no rads.
-
I hope all had a good weekend. Mama1416 - Congratulations on finishing!!! Skookum - you are next, so hang in there. PauletteK - I asked RO about Miaderm with Lidocaine and she said because I didn't have broken skin, she didn't think it would help much. So, I am rotating gel packs, IB 800 and lotion. I know how BellWaMissy feels, because I am constantly adjusting my left breast because of the fluid, but going out to buy cabbage - Thanks DownNotOut. 5 more boosts and I'm done!!!!! So Friday, while I was on the table, I felt tears falling from my eyes as I thought about the end being near. I have followup with MO on 2/26th and 2nd opinion with another MO on 2/29th, so will see what the outcome is.
Have a restful Sunday evening -
-
I finish on Thursday. 3 boosts left to go. I see a MO on Tuesday to get set up for the estrogen blockers. I think I remember it won’t be tamoxifen because of my age, 63. Is it a regular procedure after rads and surgery to have a mri or mammo or something to check that I’m really clear? I see what some of you mean about apprehension at the end of rads. I’m feeling sort of petrified instead of the joy I thought I would feel at this stage of my treatment. How does anyone know the cancer is really gone?
-
first boost done this morning ... in and out in less than 5 minutes... way better than the 20 (at least) on the proton machine!
I’ll not complain about that 20 though ... my skin held up remarkably well because of protons. Red and itchy, some swelling, but *knock on wood* no breakdown at all. We’ll see what the boosts do.
-
Skookum, I was told that the treated breast will receive a mammogram in 6 months. This allows for healing from radiation. The untreated breast receives a mammogram on its regular schedule. Other than the mammograms, my RO said no additional tests or scans unless I'm experiencing a new issue.
-
Skookum and JenRuns, hang in there! And congratulations, Mama, on finishing strong!
I'm headed for #13/20 today
I love the effects of the cabbage leaves, but one night I left them in the freezer too long and they were too cold - I agree with being careful about extreme temps on our radiated skin. I have NO swelling now and TDN (that darn nipple) is behaving quite nicely now that it can relax and not stand at attention all the time. Weird new thing that showed up on Saturday is a sparse, pustular, ITCHY rash only on that breast. What is that? It's super itchy like ant bites and I was scratching one spot all through church yesterday praying no one was noticing! But I'm not really complaining. I'll put some steroid or benadryl cream on it today and hope for the best. I meet with my RO tomorrow and will have her look at it if it isn't gone by then.
I'm pumped for my last full week of rads since I'll be finishing up next Wednesday! I hope we all have a great week full of dying microscopic cancer cells, good work days, good food, and hopefully a little sunshine thrown in.
-
DownNotOut, I also have little "dots" on my chest and left breast. The RO told me I had folliculitis, which is an inflammation of the hair follicles. Hyrdocortisone for it, as needed.
-
HersheyKiss, same thing they told me except I think the treated breast will get a mammogram at 6 most post surgery , but I could be mistaken.
-
Hi everyone!
I'm so jealous of you who got a three day break! Not here, unfortunately. I had #15/30 today - halfway there.
DownNotOut - I have the itchy rash on my inner breast. My RO prescribed a special hydrocortisone cream, but she said OTC should work just as well. I've been putting some other natural healing agents as well hoping I can avoid using the hydrocortisone but it is persistent!
I have a nice seamless bra that doesn't irritate but when I take it off at night my boob hurts! It just feels heavy and sore. Also, my skin, which usually goes back to white over the weekend was still pink today when I headed into my visit. My nipple has that same problem some of you have mentioned. I guess weeks 4 and 5 are going to be challenging. I'm hoping the last week of boosts will be easier? In the meantime, I got some cold cabbage leaves stuffed in every which way!Haha.
I also saw my RO today about my shoulder - it's sore in the joint and surrounding muscles. I have RA in remission and have been worried about radiation activating my RA. She did think the radiation was hitting a nearby muscle and it is swollen, but she didn't think the beam was hitting the joint. She also didn't think it was lymphodema. So I will just add some extra natural anti-inflammatory for now.
Are any of you on week four this week?
-
Congrats to ALL who are done!! Ringing bells for y'all. I have been busy lately (apart from rads), so I haven't checked the boards!
Finished 25/33 today, so only 8 more. My skin is holding up well. Darker under the armpit, more freckles, tender nipple, itchiness but no blistering or crazy symptoms. I just try to stay busy so I don't think about it.
I noticed more fatigue over the weekend, but I still had a fun evening out Friday and Saturday night with the DH. I rest as I can and have been sleeping pretty well at night. Grateful for all the things this is NOT.
I am SOOOOOO ready to be done with this, my final major phase of treatment.
-
Congrats Hersheykiss!!! Getting stuff done feels good!!!
-
Downnotout I used cabbage leaves during rads too. They feel nice and soothing don’t they? I should get some more!!!
-
Congrats Golfer! I’m starting Tamoxifen too next week. Here’s to tolerating it well!!
-
Awww Skookim I hope you finished up ok. It’s a long time during treatment but it’s so good to be done!!!
-
Has anyone had their nipple sink in a little bit towards the end or after Rads? Mine has a crusty bit all around the nipple especially in the sunken bit. It isn’t itchy or sore just looks gross. My scar is about 1/2 inch from areola. So that area got a hit from the boost I’m guessing. My areola has a dark ring around the outside edge but is lighter everywhere else. Anyone have similar?
-
KatieJane777 - the skin right around my nipple looks sunken in a bit. I can't tell if it is just discoloration or actually sinking in - it is also a much lighter color right where the nipple starts. The nipple and areola are very dark now but the skin at the base of the nipple is much lighter color? It makes the whole thing look weird.
