Hi

I just had surgery to put in a port and also had a few lymph nodes taken out. I started coughing up blood. Is this normal?

That doesn't sound normal to me...I would check your discharge papers and call the number provided to get your doctor's opinion.

A rare complication of a port insertion is a punctured lung. You really need to be seen

Were you intubated for the surgery? If so you could have some small abrasion with a little bleeding. But any more than just a very small amount needs to be investigated.

I now see that your surgery was 3 days ago. Certainly needs investigation

Although I wasn't coughing up blood, I did end up with a lung puncture (complete pneumothorax ) after port insertion. Although very rare, it can happen so please get it checked out ASAP.

hoping you’re being evaluated at the ER or at the very least called your surgeon on Call for the weekend. No, coughing up blood after surgery is NOT normal.

I was coughing up blood after my port insertion and it turned out that I had a bruised lung. It resolved on its own. Definitely have it checked out.

Update. I’m ok. The bleeding was from the tube. I’m sore but doing great. My first round of chemo is this Thursday. Wish me luck!
