Wigs
Hi everyone. I was diagnosed yesterday with IBC. This is my very first post. I'm going to bring up a different type of question, to get me and all of us off the chemo/stage/radiation topic. I can't believe how positive I have been....but I know it's what must happen...be a fighter. My oncologist told me when chemo starts it will be less than 3 weeks before I lose my hair. Can anyone recommend the best place to buy wigs that actually look real My heart goes out to all of you dealing with BC...and I'm glad to be here.

American Cancer Society offers a free wig often.
I bought 4 in add'n to my free one.
The best looking ones I got were from online wig sources, synthetic and were Raquel Welch and Christie Brinkley brands with MESH caps. I received huge compliments and still wear the long one for fun. The mesh caps appear to have short new growth coming out if your scalp. I bought these in the $300 ea range in 2014-2015.
Hope this helps you. And best wishes for you chemo. It does get better...yiu just can't believe that right now.
Warmly,
V

Your insurance should pay for a cranial prosthesis. Wig. Have your MO write a script before you go shopping. Somebody in the office should be able to tell you where the shops in your location is.

I found a local wig shop that specializes in fittings for chemo patients. I bought an amazing strawberry blonde "cranial prosthesis" and wore every day until my hair grew out about an inch or so.

Thank you all for your comments. Had no idea insurance would cover or could possibly cover the cost of wigs. Appreciate the newsy info and links.

I found that I really like having wigs as an option during/after chemo. I like being able to look more like my usual self rather than my cancer self.
There's a wig store called Cysterwigs which I highly recommend. They have informational videos on different types of wigs, and they run sales regularly. It's a great resource for those of us who are new to wigs.

I received a prescription for a cranial prosthesis but never used it. (I just used scarfs and hats).
But when looked around for a breast prosthesis (I had a prescription from my BS), I found out that my insurance would only cover it 100% if I used an 'in network' provider. (I have BC/BS PPO) My insurance only had one local 'in network' provider of breast prosthesis and I live in a major metro area (San Francisco area).
So check with your insurance company before buying a wig to make sure they will cover it.
