Towards - Congratulations! Doing a happy dance for you.
It's been 7 days since my last rad and I still prefer to be braless. I told my 80 year old mother that today and she said, "well Sarah, I ditched my bras years ago! Good riddance". Of course she has very small breasts..... And doesn't have to wear a suit for work LOL.
I'm looking forward to the day that all of a sudden I notice that I'm not noticing my breast.
Happy Wednesday and hugs to those still in the midst of rads. You'll be done soon!
-
Jen i had boosts on my scar too. Had a total of 5 & they were alot shorter than the regular rads. They take a scan of you prior to your 1st boost. Also this allows the rest of your skin to heal or try to heal lol. You are almost at the finish line the countdown has begun woot woot woot.
Hang in there ladies your halfway through the week so continue on kicking C to the curb. Wishing minimal SE's for you ladies & like Paulette says don't forget to lotion by your coloerbone & back for those that are getting rads to your lymph nodes. For some reason the beams like those areas.
-
Thanks, PVM. He did say the scar... which is interesting because I've seen others talk about finding a tumor on their scar line later. I need to ask when I see him next Tuesday. I'm not really good at thinking of all my questions on the spot
-
Goodness I always see my RO on Tuesday. Yesterday I could get close to the full length mirror in the office, for some crazy reason I looked at myself. I think I wanted to check out the breakdown in my skin. But I noticed my neck looked like I hadn’t washed it in a month! I hope no one thinks I’m not washing my neck and behind my ears!🤪
Some days I just have to laugh at myself...it’s either that or cry. I’ve always preferred a good laugh.
-
Congrats Towards!!!! Gentle hugs Down and Skookum
!!!I had my last regular rad today and move to 4 boosts to finish up. I have some small rad burns on my nipple so I am using Solugel (Aussie product for burns)and they gave me some dressings for if it gets worse. It isn’t too bad and doesn’t hurt unless prodded so I ditched the physio for a few weeks. I only have to work this afternoon and I get 4 days off so I’m not too stressed. I can rest and be topless. Ugh daughter just informed me her boyfriend is coming over tonight so I guess I won’t be topless tonight lol.
-
Smashleywnc, welcome!
Towards, congrats on finishing!! Yay!
I had 5 boosts but it's because I had a lumpectomy. The boosts were only targeted to my surgery site only... 18 seconds exactly.
I had my last boost today so am done! Yeah boi!! My techs gave me this little certificate which was very cute and everyone gave me hugs. I'm so glad this part is over. I had a huge peel under my arm on Sunday and it's still weeping and painful. The rest of my skin is pulling when I move so doesn't feel great but isn't painful at least. This open skin sucks. I ditched my bra over the weekend. My RO said it would be about 10 more days until I really see my skin turning around. Until then, it's lotion, lotion and more lotion. They told me 3x a day for 2 weeks, then 2x a day for 2 weeks, then 1x a day for 2 weeks. Anything after that is up to me. I have a skin check with my RO in a month.
Whew!!!
-
Katiejane, that's great that you're moving on to the home stretch with only 4 boosts to go! I admit that rads is flying by for me, but it is blissfully convenient to get there from work and is even on the way home for me. How lucky I am! The lump in my throat is better tonight and except for some tenderness right on my nipple and a slight pink hue to the front of my breast, I am doing great with SE's. Of course, I'm only #5 today. They played the blues on the stereo today but with only 4 zaps, I don't get to listen long to the music. I practice my Bradley relaxation (a natural childbirth technique I used) when settling into my mold so I don't tense up.
Skookum, I'm sure folks know you are bathing! As long as you smell good, that is!
-
Great job katiejane777!
Hope your body heals quickly and well.
-
Down, I need to practice some relaxation. I just had #3 and have been tired, but swear is from tensing up, trying not to move!!
I saw the RO today and asked him if the redness on my torso I noticed after the first day was typical. He said no, it wasn't. He thought it was from one of 2 things. 1- my body was being hyper reactive between the surgery, the infection I just got over that was where they took the LN and now radiation and was sending an abundance of red blood cells to help heal or 2- the infection isn't completely out of my body and was settling. I voted for option 1. He agreed, but said we'd be watching it. Power of positive thinking and a whole lot of prayers.
On the down side of the week now.... Enjoy ladies.
-
OCDAmy, how is your expander feeling? My skin on the radiated breast is so tight over the expander. I saw the RO Monday for one-week post rad follow up and she suggested having my PS remove some of the fluid. I asked how much and she said like 40CCs! OMG...I was not able to get as filled as I would have liked before starting rads and so I'm not happy with the idea of removing some fluid. She said I don't have to do it, but she's still worried about the tight skin cutting off the blood supply and then I would have to have the expander removed. I see my PS in about two weeks so I'm praying the tightness will have relieved some by then. My skin itself is slowly getting better, but not the tightness - the breast tingles and burns (even though it's numb) and range of motion in the left arm is limited. Just wondered if you had any of this - hope yours feels better!
-
Skookum - we have to laugh. Make up some wild story about your neck, modeling scarves or testing makeup, whatever makes you giggle, go with it.
Congrats to all who have finished. Those still in it, there is an end in sight. Keep on slathering on the lotions, we'll get thru this!
-
Congrats Scaligirl!!! Heal well everyone who is a bit sore and peely at the moment. Gentle hugs.
The rest of us still gong keep up the moisturising
-
Congrats to all you who have finished!!
-
Sonia, my expander does feel tighter but not too bad. What is tight is my pec muscle up by my armpit. I keep doing my stretching but my range of motion isn't as good as it was before rads. I hear you about not wanting to remove fluid, mine isn't as big as I wanted it to be. I see PS next week, I'll let you know that she says.

Hi everyone. I am currently still undergoing chemo and not due to start radiation until April, but I had a question I thought you could all weigh in on.
Do you think it is silly to check out two different radiologists? I didn't check out additional surgeons or medical oncologist. Both came extremely highly recommended by multiple people from different areas and since they did, and what my surgeon said jived so much with what I read online, I went with the fastest route then. And radiation seems to be the least stressful part of this process, so it's a little weird to me that I'm considering checking out two different places/people.
I have a choice between two radiologists though. One is at the cancer center I'm currently at. I love the building and know the place. The drive isn't bad, about 20 minutes without too much crazy traffic. This radiologist doesn't seem to be very well known though. I've only found two reviews online and two people that I personally know who have worked with him, but he gets glowing reviews from all of them. The other one is at a major hospital system in town. The drive to this big hospital can be 20 min. or 45 depending on traffic. (When I left there the other day after visiting someone, it took me an hour to get home because of a crazy busy intersection that is always ten times worse when it snows (and during rush hour) and it was snowing big time.) However, tons of people have worked with him and he consistently gets five star reviews and glowing recommendations. Now....I also know that you work more with the techs than the radiologist.....so......... I don't know if it's silly to check out both places and see what I think of them or not. If both are good and the drives aren't that different except for traffic issues, do I just stay where I'm comfortable and already familiar with things?
Thanks for opinions you have for me!
-
Petey, I would be more concerned about what type of equipment they use, the experience of the RO, and what type of treatment plan they would suggest. I only saw my RO once a week for a few minutes. I would want to be certain I am getting the best treatment with the best equipment. Will your insurance pay for a second opinion? If so I would do it and compare. My radiation was done at an NCI Cancer Center and uses IMRT technology so I felt confident that I was getting the best treatment for me. The RO was nice but like I said, I rarely saw him.
-
I can't remember if it was this thread or the December rads thread that we were talking about the area being radiated and it was much larger than some of us thought. I found this picture that shows the area of radiation if you are having your nodes radiated. This is a good representation of where I got rads and where you should make sure you are lotioning.
-
congrats Scaligirl you did it!!!! Now is time to heal & continue kicking butt. Hoping it does not get any more painful.
Amy that is a perfect diagram & so where i had my rads too like you. I think you should post this on our fb page as its very helpful to those that are going to start rads.
Petey I agree with Amy in regards to you maybe getting a 2nd opinion on where you would like to get your rads done. Like Amy said I only saw my RO once a week for a few minutes so he could check up on my skin. You want to make sure the equipment they are using is good as well as you feel comfortable with your techs as its very important.
Have a great rads day ladies you are almost at the end of the week & can relax & let your skin heal a bit for the weekend & rest. Continue kicking butt ladies!
-
Sara, I have 2 ROs. Both are in the same practice and alternate seeing me every week. Each RO spends at least 30 minutes/appointment with me: checking my skin, interpreting test results, discussing next steps, etc. My suggestion is to set up consults with the ROs, ask questions about the equipment they'll be using, and see if they have a good rapport with you. Since you will receive treatment on the left breast, inquire whether or not you will need to perform deep breath holds.
-
Congrats Scaligirl!!! Woot Woot!
Also congrats to the ones who finished!
Amy that’s such a great picture, explained well on all the nodes.
Ladies, I have been busy with all the appointments, met with my family doc and MO today. Also Chinese New Year is right around the corner so I’m getting ready and cleaning my house, hard to believe how dirty my house.
-
Congrats Scaligirl...hooray that you are finished!
-
Scaligirl, I wanted to jump in and say congratulations on finishing! Was it great not having to go for rads today!?! Way to go, girl! Please keep in touch with us - we want to know how you are healing up, plus, if you ditch us, I will miss your cute picture!
Petey111 - I got a RO second opinion and I am glad I did. Both RO's came highly recommended and have good credentials. Both ROs described similar planning strategies doing a CT/simulation and plugging the numbers into a computer program that does the physics for them to determine angles, etc. The treatment length was different, thought. I talked it over with my MO and he actually preferred one RO over the other and I decided to trust his opinion. As it turned out, the machines were similar (I have "run of the mill" BC and am getting 3D-CRT, not IMRT). Also, convenience IS a big factor unless you have extra time on your hands (who does?). This is every day for 4-6 weeks, right? I opted for the location closest to my work so I can scoot over there in the afternoon and then head home. Traffic jams and weather are real, and I did not want the stress of fighting a longer commute and risking being late for my treatments. This way, I fight traffic to get home but not for rads. I breathe easy and enjoy NPR or an audiobook on the way home and arrive calm. My family's expectations for dinner are realistic during these weeks so I don't feel guilty for fixing simple dinners or having my DH cook. Meet them both, see who you have a better rapport with, and pray about it. You'll make the right decision for you.
Amy, great diagram! I still cannot reach much of my back to lotion up there, but I'm speaking to my DH today so maybe I'll ask for help afterall. Who knows where that would lead
-
Petey I don’t think it’s weird at all to get a second opinion! They are giving you radiation you want the BEST people doing this! My daughter is an Radiation Therapist and she has done a few placements at a big hospital in our area. She recommended them over the private breast centre I had my surgery through. She said they had more RTs and a dedicated breast machine. If there was a breakdown then they could just switch you over to the other machine. They also have psychologists and social workers right there if you are having a rough day, My breast surgeons reasoning for recommending the private radiation place was that they had a “newer machine”. My daughter afterwards said that was stupid because the hospital where I was being treated had a much better machine. I had another friend who had a different type of cancer and he got treated at the private clinic because they were better at treating his type of cancer. Maybe ask some questions of both places to help you decide? Like others have said it is the Radiation Therapists you will see each day and they are the ones doing your rads. You want them on their A game as well as a fantastic Rad Onc. Good luck with chemo and rads.
-
Petey111: I agree with the others ... you won't spend much time at all with the RO. What type of equipment do they have, do they do cone-beam CT scanning, what would your plan be, etc. In that regard, I'd seek out either a second opinion, or do some research online to see what they offer.
OCDAmy: Great image, thanks for sharing! I was surprised when my neck started turning pink. It made sense when I thought it through, but seeing the image really helps put it in perspective!
We're expecting 5-10 inches of snow tonight, and I have to be at the hospital at 9 a.m. It's usually a 30 minute drive, but I'm planning for about 90 minutes tomorrow. Ugh. (Usually it's no biggie .. .I work at the hospital. But in conditions like this, I would work from home. Can't do that with rads.
-
Be safe Jenruns! Snow commutes suck.
-
These are great ideas of questions to ask and thank you for reassuring me it's not dumb to want to check them both out! I really appreciate the input! I'll keep checking back to see if there are any other questions any one thinks I should ask.
Good luck with your treatments!!
-
Thanks everyone! It was definitely weird not having to go anywhere for treatment yesterday. I'm totally over it though LOL!
Amy, great diagram. That is precisely where I got treated too. It's hard to picture it when you're planning or even in the midst of it, so that is super helpful to explain why so much of my torso is oddly tanned.
My raw area is less and less raw each day thank goodness, and the rest of the area is peeling like mad now with actual skin underneath so that's been interesting. I put my bra back on today as I really need the support. Gotta go buy more non-stick first aid pads to stuff between my bra on the raw side though.
Oh and I am actually starting to notice my dark brown hair growing back beyond all the wispy grey/whites that are longer. It is all very short and still seems to be growing super s low even though I am taking 10,000 mcg of biotin a day. It makes me really question how much less I would have if I wasn't taking that. I really thinking it is going to be months and months before I can ditch the wigs and hats. Maybe in another month I will be confident enough to rock the "recovering from chemo" look with super super super short hair. Right now I have too much shiny scalp showing through to even think about pulling that off.
I took this is this morning, so 7 weeks PFC. From a few feet away it's like I have a little brown halo over my head LOL.
Anyway... thanks again for all the support! I hope everyone has a great treatment free weekend
!
-
Scaligirl, I bet it starts coming back in pretty quickly now! I can't wait to ditch the hats. I made an appointment with my hair dresser in a few weeks when I will be 18 weeks PFC. I think by then I can go without a that but am going to need it colored and styled somehow. May fill in with that Topix I have seen other women use. Best of luck with the hair growth.
-
Scaligirl, your hair looks great for just 7 weeks PFC!
Amy, what is Topix?
-
OCDAmy, The chart was very helpful to understand the large area of treatment. Thanks. #19/33 done. DH had to drive me in after a lot of snow overnight. I was not comfortable as a Southern transplant.
I must say I have been really tired today. I want to watch the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics, but I very well may fall asleep.
Looking good Scali!
