After 3 yrs I'm ready to speak with a PS about achieving some balance but the PS office said I needed areferral from my MO. I felt really put off by the tone of the receptionist and was wondering about your experience with getting in to see someone?

It's required in Ontario that in all cases where OHIP will be paying, initial appointments with any specialist must be set up by referral. The referral to a PS could be from your GP or your MO or your surgeon - any doctor you see regularly. My reconstruction was 12 years ago and it's been over 10 years since I've seen a PS, but recently I wanted to talk to a PS about a particular reconstruction issue. I told my GP which PS I wanted to see and his office made the referral and called me back with the appointment. Once the appointment is made, the referring doctor no longer needs to be involved.

For cosmetic procedures, i.e. ones that you pay for yourself (or possibly have private insurance cover), no referral is necessary.

Thank you! I seen a PS after my initial dx but I wasn't aware of the need for a referral.
