Thyroid out of whack
Anyone experiencing thyroid getting out of whack after surgery/treatment? How long before leveling out

Yes. My thyroid has been way out of whack since midway through treatment and I suspect it's related to Herceptin and maybe to Taxol too. My TSH/thyroid simulating hormone level was way off in November 2017 (I had trouble processing information and finding words then, much more than with my usual chemo brain). Thyroid medication is helping but it takes a long time for that to have an impact, my physician says.

I've been taking Synthroid for over 25 years. Chemo did change my thyroid levels. We waited to see if my levels would go back to pre-chemo levels but they haven't. Since it's been almost 1 year PFC and my levels are still 'abnormal', my PCP suggested that I lower my Synthroid dose. I'm wondering if my thyroid levels will ever go back to pre-chemo levels.

I’m 6 weeks PFC - just had thyroid checked and yes, out of whack. I have been taking medication for hypothyroidism for three years. My number is usually 2.3 - normal range is up to 4.50. I’m at 8.9. My medication was increased 2 weeks ago and I will get blood work rechecked in March. I think this in combination with Taxol has me very fatigued and I have muscle pain. The joys of BC

I had a partial thyroidectomy in 2016 for what turned out to be benign nodules (but we couldn't confirm that on biopsy, had to remove it to make sure). I have not needed supplementation and had ok thyroid blood work in Dec 2017.
Now going through chemo. How soon after should I recheck thyroid levels? -
I finished chemo early August 2017. I had my thyroid levels checked in Nov. Since I have a history of both Graves (during my pregnancies) and now Hashimoto. They were within the normal range. I was on low dose thyroid meds. I was feeling sooooo tired recently and they rechecked my thyroid levels and they more than tripled. She also did an antibody test. Normal range is 9 and less. Mine was 900. The biggest change since Nov. has been me starting Tamoxifen. I'm nearly 99% certain that drug put things out of whack. In the meantime my doctor upped my med. dosage and told me to cut gluten out of my diet since my antibodies were so sky high. Will recheck levels in 6 weeks.

wow Shellsatthebeach - that's crazy numbers. Good of you to share that we need to be vigilant with the hormone blockers too... hope you get your levels regulated quickly.

Thank you moth!

yes, the chemo affected my levels, had been on synthyroid for several years since having my thyroid destroyed with iodine in 1995 , the chemo definently messed with the levels, the endro had to lower my meds last month as levels was still too high, it take awhile to get corrected again , but I can feel the difference some, will go back in 3 months for another recheck

How does iodine destroy your thyroid?
-
I think 4nell means "Radioactive Iodine" (RAI) treatment destroyed her thyroid. RAI is used to treat hyperthyroidism. I had RAI in 1990 and it destroyed my thyroid too.
-
Thanks Bellasmom, I was reading excess dietary iodine is not good for Hashimoto’s too.
-
sorry I didn't clarify, yes it was radioactive iodine

Not sure where to post this but....does anyone with thyroid problems (or otherwise) take a multivitamin that does NOT contain iodine? The brand I'd been using changed their formula and added iodine.
If anyone is curious, two years ago I had a fluky multi-month episode of silent subaccute thyroiditis. (TSH and other thyroid numbers were off.). As predicted, it eventually resolved itself. But my doc continued to monitor my TSH/T4 and we noticed that when I took a multivit with iodine, the TSH was slightly elevated. Multi-vit w/o iodine and I was fine. Doc said take the vit w/o the iodine.

I found a multi-vit at the local natural food today by My Kind that doesn't have iodine. FYI in case this helps anyone else.
