Prosthesis

I had my mastectomy August 1, 2017. I chose not to do reconstruction. I am 67 years old. I am totally frustrated with the prosthetics I have tried. I started wth a weighted Amoena. It was so heavy and left a giant gap above it where so much tissue was removed. Also irritated the swelling under my arm. Then I got an Amoena right side silicone. Same problems. Now I have ordered a foam form. It's much lighter but moves all over and is way higher than my other breast.

If any of you have suggestions, I would so appreciate. This is really bothering me a lot. Went out this weekend and tried on about 20 tops. Found myself in tears. I don't like going out. It just looks so bad. Thx.

01Sadie, I bet you would find more information and suggestions on the forum specifically for those who have had a mastectomy and no reconstruction https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/82

    Hi 01Sadie,

I am half flat and also had a mastectomy August 1st. I have an amoeba prosthesis and also a Knitted Knocker. When I am home I wear a soft cami and several layers. When I am babysitting I wear the knitted knocker because I hold my granddaughter and feel better with padding.

I occasionally have stinging under my arm.

Recently I have started going out half flat without a bra or prosthesis. It feels more comfortable. When I do wear the prosthesis I remove it as soon as I get home because the band just feels so tight. I feel self conscious and a little afraid someone will bump into me, but I'm getting more used to going out bra-free.

I hope it gets better for you.

Definitely check the mastectomy forum so you will get responses from many more people. My mother had a single mastectomy 5 years ago, and had difficulty finding a prosthetic she was comfortable with, so she rarely wears one now - mostly only for “dressy” occasions. She is not particularly well-endowed though, so while it is noticeable, it’s not obvious unless you look that she is “lopsided”.
