A bit of a hiccup today. Was doing well then last night noticed the bottom of my alnd scar was red and sore and swollen. I put some pressure on it and pus came out! Ugh. Not a lot but no it's infected. Waiting to see to today. He may start me in antib no more cream in that area just cool saline wipes. Today is 16/25
-
Tpralph, Sorry about that! I hope it heals quickly.
Got a call first thing this morning that Day #16 will have to wait -- the machine was down. This now pushes my days to March, but I guess that's ok. I was more worried about missing the day itself as far as treatment goes. She assured me you can miss a day or two. They said they would get me somewhere if the machine remained down. Has this happened to anyone else?
-
Understood JenRuns. We each know what is best for us. I have also heard that when going through trauma that we have to feel it sooner or later and sooner is better. Like most things in life it is a question of balance, much like being up on a high wire. Hugs.
-
Kim, I missed a day due to a power outage, so one day has been added to the end of my treatment schedule. The techs and nurse told me a day or two will not impact treatment. If more than two days, they would send me to another location. I am glad that hasn't happened; the other location is more than 60 minutes away!
-
Hi! May I join you? I started my radiation at the end of January. I just did #6 of 30 today.
My skin is starting to change color already, which has me worried
-
Thanks, Hershey!
-
Hi, Smashleywnc, and welcome to the group!
The skin over my collarbone changed color quickly, then the back of my shoulder, and now under my arm. My RO was expecting the changes because "those areas typically don't see much sun." As long as I'm not itchy, I am okay.
-
Today was 13/30. Almost half way done! I'm not having any skin issues.....yet. My boob is starting to get kind of tender. I am having some swallowing issues which my RO said may happen. I had silent GERD before all this and the RADs seem to be aggravating it. My energy level seems a little low but I'm still working full time so I guess I'm doing alright. I can feel the scar tissue thickening in my armpit.
Kokoro - my RO has me using Aloe Vera gel (the one with NO alcohol) - she would like me to apply 4 times a day but since I'm working that's not feasible. I get one or two applications a day. She also has me using Aquaphor at night.
-
Welcome Smashleywmc! You've found the right group and congrats on finishing #6!
KCH2018, you're almost 1/2 way to the finish line! Way to go!
I had #3/20 today and I cannot believe I looked a little pink over the weekend. Just a little, and it didn't hurt. DH bought me some Miaderm today and the salesgirl was so worried that it was for him. But I will use it faithfully as I am getting Aquaphor all over my clothes during the day and need something that will soak in better. Also I've had a vague headache on Saturday and today. MO says it could be a systemic interleukin-6 (or was it 3?) reaction. But I'm still so excited to get this thing DONE!
Hope you all had a great day, ladies!
-
Welcome Smashley and everyone.
I have been busy the last couple days, and glad to hear many of you are doing well.
Tpralph, sorry to hear that you got infected. Prayers your skin will be fine and the infected area will heal fast.
Down I found Miaderm cream is good, on the bad days I used Aquaphor at night also.
Have a great zap day tomorrow.
-
I finally had day #1!! Quick question- along my ribs and around my back are discolored. I was expecting the breast, collarbone, even shoulder, but not ribs/abdomen etc. Has this happened to others?? Will bring it up tomorrow, but thought I'd check with my trusty forum first!😜
Tpralph- sorry about the infection. Hope it doesn't delay things for you. And that you get antibiotics.
Keep on a zapping ladies.....
-
BellWAMissy- I finished back on 1/18, but I too had some ribs react but was told they weren't being given rads. No idea why, but they seem normal now.
Tpralph- might be from an internal stitch working its way out. I had a bump at the end of LX scar, they said don't pick at it, etc... After a few rads it was gone. So sorry you got an infection! It will clear up before you know it.
Keep lotioning ladies, the end is in sight. You got this. Onward!
-
tpralph- dang that sounds like a big worry. Hope it heals quickly and you can get on with your treatment.
No treatment for me today the machine was down.
I was also given some 1% silver sulfadiazine cream to put on the open skin area.
A down machine might have worked well for me this time around...my reward on February 22, 2018 will be a big piece of cherry pie!
Have many of you experienced the machine being down so unable to treat. This is the 2-3 time at the office I go to. Kind of adds on a bit more worry.
-
Welcome new members! Tpralph i hope it heals quickly and gives you no more trouble.
To all those getting pink early on don't panic. I was a bit pink in one area before I started and by day 2 my whole breast was pink. It's just got more pink, dimply and swollen as I've progressed. Day 14/20 today and I saw the Rad Onc. She said my skin is holding up great and the swelling and redness should resolve after I'm done. I've been going to a physio to help with Lympharic drainage and I think it's helping a little. I've just been using moisturiser (Moo Goo) a few times a day, using a wet microfiber cloth to cool it down and a gel pack from the fridge. I do have some 0.5% hydrocortisone for the itch but I've only used it once. 2 more whole breast and 4 boosts to go. Yah!
-
Skookum, my machine went down twice during my rads. They said it doesn't happen often and that it's ok to miss a few days.
Bell, my rads also went on ribs, about two inches below Breast and all the way to the sternum. It was a pretty wide area.
-
Welcome Smashleywnc . I got pink pretty quickly but it doesn't necessarily mean you will be effected any worse or better by the rads. It's bee 7 days since my last rad and I still itch and am dark but it's not too bad. I took some benedryl last night to cut down on the itching and help me sleep. It actually worked and I got a pretty good nights sleep.
Just keep lotioning up ladies! Now I can wait to see if my lumpechtomy scar will ever settle down and the area around it will flatten a bit. The lymnode scar isn't too bad looking but the other, not so much.
gentle hugs ladies. keep strong and lotion on.
-
Welcome Smashley
thanks everyone for the well wishes. the RO said to do saline cleanses and compresses and to use polysporin.
There could be a stitch in there Cindy, there has been a small lump there since the surgery in Dec. it is at the bottom of the incision line. Oh well, wont hold up my rads anyhow. Day 17/25! Rest of skin is good, some tanning/ pinkness under the arm
i too have been wondering about the ribs if they were getting radiated. I figure there must be some as my RO said that the radiation would skim part of my lung so it would have to go through the ribs to do that!
-
Tralph, I had to ditch the bra about half way through because the band was rubbing where it was being radiated. It felt so much better without a bra.
-
Hello everyone. I had some pretty rough days here at the end. Physically and mentally. Just had to rest as much as possible. Happy to report that I had my last RT today and celebrated with an Oncology Massage as planned. It felt very healing and I was very grateful to the skilled hands of my therapist. You can tell she does this with much love in her heart! Just what I needed.
My RO says it will take 10 days before my skin starts to heal significantly. I never really burnt but my skin reacted the way it does to the sun by getting lots of brown spots and an itchy rash. I took Zyrtec for 8 days but it was wiping me out so I stopped it. She wants be to lotion up at least twice a day for a month and assured me it will all clear up. I am ready to feel good! Especially knowing that I will be starting the letrozole and all that may entail. I am grateful to be done with this step and I bet I will be really happy not having to wake so early and be at treatments by 8:15.
Sending encouraging words to all of you whether still receiving treatments or in the recovery phase. We are strong and resilient. We have good days and challenging ones but leaning on each other is so important.
PS I wore a thin cotton tee under my sports bra after surgery and halfway through RT but then had to ditch the bra when my skin got too iritated. Luckily I am not very large so this was doable. Even so I often was more comfortable reclining than sitting up towards end.
🌸🌷💕

Sending you hugs JenRuns. 🤗🌸

Towards...Congrats on completing rads! Cheers!
-
Congratulations, Towards! So happy for you!
-
Towards congrats on finishing rads woot woot woot. Rest & heal you have earned it & celebrate that you have kicked butt!!!
Tpralph oh no that sounds painful hope it heals alot sooner than later, glad you can continue with rads. You are almost at the finish line hang in there & take it easy on yourself & on your skin.
Ladies for those that are finding the rads a bit itchy on their skin i ditched my bra & used a simple comfortable cotton bralette. it was gentle on my skin & there was no digging into my shoulder or ribs or anything at all. For those ladies that are getting rads on their lymph nodes, don't forget to lotion your back as for some reason the rads hit your back as well. Continue to kick butt ladies!
-
Towards, congratulations!!! Woot woot!! Skin might be more irritating for next few days but it is over now.
I ditched my bra during radiation I just finally picked up my bra few days ago. If your nodes are going to be treated make sure lotion up to your neck. I was shock when my neck turned red.
-
Towards, Congratulations! You have hung in there and finished! I'm so happy for you!
Feeling a bit emotionally low tonight but I'm catching up on all of your posts. I met with a different RO for my weekly meeting, and he advised that I continue to stretch that arm and lotion up at least 2 times/day for one whole year after Rads is completed. He says it can help with the long term skin effects and gives the best cosmetic result. Wow. That is a long time. I'm not lotioning on my back yet but I'm mad at my DH for being mad at me today and I don't want to ask him to do it. I feel like I have a tightness like a lump in my lower throat since last night and it may be esophageal edema, maybe from scatter radiation since the beam does not go to that area, and he was surprised I could have a SE like that so soon (me too!). But I'm still grateful to be getting this done!
I am keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers, as always. Rest to us all tonight...
-
Towards- congrats! So sweet to finish.
DownNotOut- a WHOLE year!?! Holy bagolies. Just the thought of that makes me shake my head. I'm almost 3 weeks out from rads, I saw MO today, she wants me to heal more before staring the AI. So I'll be lotioning up for a few more weeks, but a year would be the last straw, the straw that breaks the camels back. LOL I have to laugh or I'd cry. Please run that by your regular RO. I'll use Palmers cocoa butter, but dang if I want Aquaphor staining clothes for a full year. 😬
-
Boosts ... who had them, and were they focused on one spot in particular?
Saw my RO yesterday and he said we are doing 25 on the proton machine, then the last 5 on a traditional machine, because it’ll be just my incision that is being radiated. Didn’t have the thought to as if that was a boost or not.
-
Jen, I had my boost simulation yesterday. The boosts will target the tumor bed only and not the entire breast. My techs told me that everyone likes the boosts; treatments are short, and the electrons do not go deep into the tissue.
-
Thanks
I confirmed with the tech this morning that yes, it's the "boosts" that are planned for that last week. She said he'll be targeting "the cavity" and around my scar, which is on the underside of my breast.
I'm sad that I'm going to be moving locations for the treatment though -- I'm in the proton center now, with the same five techs every day. Going to the other center (literally down the hall, but managed as a completely different space) for just the last week means I'll miss sharing my last treatment with the gals I've been working with. The tech today did say that they'd put a note in my file to have the tech bring me to the proton center on my last day, so I can ring "their" bell. (I think I'll take them my 'thank you' gifts the last day with them though.)
-
Jen, I didn't think they did boosts for mastectomy. I assumed it was just for lumpectomy. So they are targeting the scar? I should have asked about that. I didn't have proton, I had IMRT.
