2018 Running Thread
"Welcome to the happiest thread on BCO!
We've had a lively conversation in the Run thread in the past, with busy times and lulls, about running through chemo, running bras, fitness watches, training regimens, physiotherapy, and so forth.
This thread is for anybody that's "running". "Running" is not a pace and it's not a distance. It's an intention and an action to challenge ourselves. Truth be told, there are times when walking is "running", and a few shuffling laps of the surgery ward a day after mastectomy is not much use for the body, but of immeasurable value to the mind. I recall a management trainer at a former workplace saying, "if a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing badly, if that's the only way you can do it." We've never judged pace or distance here. Some who will visit the thread are in Week 1 Couch-to-5K and some are veteran marathoners, and there's something to learn from everyone. We celebrate heart. We also commiserate with those tough outings, injuries, and recovering from surgeries and other treatments. Some people do lots of run events, and others don't ever do the events. That's okay, but we traditionally maintain a running event calendar at the top of the thread to cheer on those who are doing the events, and to encourage those who are "on the fence" about whether to do one."
I will do my best to update the race listings often ![]()

I just ran the 10K at Best Damn Race Jacksonville, my first race since my hysterectomy on 11/8!

-
So far, I am running:
Donna Half Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer - Jacksonville, FL February 11
Best Damn Race Orlando (Half Marathon) - March 3
This will be my third year running Donna and my first as a survivor, so I'm especially looking forward to that one.
-

Finished my first FULL marathon! and I didnt hate it! totally willing to do another one. huh go figure! I actually hurt less after the full than i ever do after a half. For now Im doing the "try not to sign up for every single race" thing
My husband wants nothing more to do with this "running thing" hehehe Nightcrawler- I have added your races to the list

-
Way to go, Panthrah!
I've only done two fulls, Philadelphia in 2013 and Pittsburgh in 2015.
I'd planned to do the Jacksonville Marathon last year, but I got diagnosed, and I knew there was no way I could commit to training for another full. I want to do the full this year. This is a reasonable goal for me, as the race isn't until December.
-
I signed up for two races a month ago, before my dx: the Shamrock Run 5-miler and an April 5k sponsored by a local parish. Surgery will be in February. I am planning on running them both

-
list as been updated. Hope all are doing great
:) -
Hello fellow runners!
I just signed up for the Donna 10K on February 10. This means I'll be doing a little challenge weekend where I run the 10K on Saturday and the half the next day. I feel I can handle it!
-
Nightcrawler- added the 10k to the list ( already had the half up there) and yes i think you can do it
I signed up for 2 *gasp* local half marathons... cause Ive only run Disney halfs...figured I should try a race that doesnt require a 230am wake up time or a hotel

-
LOL I've done two "challenge weekends" in Clermont, where I ran a 12K on Saturday and a half the next day. One of the reasons why I felt I could handle a Donna challenge is that the Donna race is local to me; it doesn't require a hotel, and the 10K is only about 15 minutes away.
I will have to get up at 4:00 a.m. for the half marathon, though, because that's all the way out by the beach, which is a 45-minute drive from home due to all the road closures for the race.
I'm a night person (hence, the owl), so the hardest part for me isn't running the 13.1 miles. It's the getting up at 4:00 a.m.
I am looking so forward to this race weekend. When I was diagnosed last year, I envisioned this weekend in my mind: putting on my Survivor bib and participating in these events.
-
so I just had two cyst aspirations in the office.. one was manual.. I didnt even know that was a thing! i dont recommend it. * grabs an ice pack *
-

My 50th race and my first local half marathon. I gotta say.. I just wasnt into it. it was the most sleep Ive had before a race, the latest start to a race, no hotel, no flight, no friends on course or at the finish and I could not get my body to accept we were doing this. my time wasnt awful but bleh I didnt "enjoy" this race. and holy hell san diego has a lot of hills
but based on the race photos, I was a giggling fool

-
I look at this thread to cheer myself up. Love the photos & the energy from all of you.
Right now I can barely walk some days but my eye is on the survivor running bibs in the months & years ahead. -
yes yes !!! work that goal.. hell do laps around the couch
:) -

Had a lumpectomy on 2/23 and ran a 12K trail race yesterday. (I'm in the middle.) Had to hold my wayward boob on the downhills the last 2-3 miles but everything was still attached when I finished. (: My quads are really sore today since I haven't been running, but I had the BEST time running in the woods and catching up with friends! Now waiting on Oncotype to come back to figure out the next step.
-
those are EPIC smiles!!! that is a great picture!! I took me a min cause i thought the hydration tube was coming from the friend on the left hand sides pack. I was thinking .. wow they need to run pretty close together :P
-
Great picture ReadyAbout and great job on the race!
Panthrah and Nightcrawler you have been busy ladies! Love all the race pics!
Moth hang in there and do what you can!
I had posted in the 2017 thread but missed the 2018 thread until now. Finished chemo in Nov 2017 and radiation the end of Jan. I am currently running, increasing mileage and planning to run a half in May. I have a training plan I am loosely following but mainly just trying to run 4x a week and increase mileage on my long run and 1 other run every week. Taking it slow...My body has been thru a lot. It is not my first half so feel like I can do this with the goal to finish and run the entire 13.1 and not worry about pace or finish time this spring. But that's easier said than done! 😊
Also hoping for a fall half and/or a 10 mile race in Sept and Oct. Making decision on hysterectomy or oopherectomy in June so that will obviously affect my running and training this summer
Keep on, keeping on ladies!
-
Runnermum - welcome back
Sounds like you are doing very well
Keep us posted on your running adventures. My next local half is in 11 days. hopefully Ill have a better attitude than the last race hehehe Hell.. Ill wear mickey mouse ears and play disney music if I have too keep myself smiling

-
Or ill just get a chest cold the week of the race and just try to survive it. Im flexible that way

-
Ladies, you long distance runners AMAZE me! I don't have the mental toughness to keep it up longer than a 10K so you have all my admiration!
Not to toot my own horn, but I ran a 5K on Saturday (with horrible cold temperatures and wind here in Upstate NY). I didn't pick up an age group award like I have in the past, but I did shave 45 seconds off my time from the same race last year, despite being in full radiation treatment right now (10 of 20 on the books).
I am so relieved that cancer has not slowed me down, yet, and I hope I can keep up my energy and drive ( I think the drive is the key. I am more motivated than ever to keep cancer from breaking my spirit).
Keep running, ladies!
-
Pace- WOOT WOOT nice work!!! and yea.. with the right running buddy... long distance running is a great time to catch up .. I bet you could do it

-
Welcome and great job Paco!
Panrath...hope you are feeling better as the week goes on! Is your race on Saturday?
Well I broke down and registered for my spring half this morning. The race is in May and getting close to being capped. I havent had the best training the last couple months...still recovering from chemo side effects (finished chemo in Nov and rads the end of Jan) and we have had a very long crappy winter ( we still have snow on ground!) It's 5 wks out from race day and my longest runs have been 8 miles. I should be able to get in a couple 10s and 11 before the half And do ok. Won't be breaking any records this year. I just really want to do it. The thought of running this half this spring got me thru chemo last fall!
-
I just learned that I will need a mastectomy instead of radiation. I'm getting a prepectoral reconstruction (over instead of under the chest muscle) which is supposed to allow for faster healing. I don't know how long I will need to refrain from running, but I've had high hamstring tendinopathy for over a year so I guess this may be an opportunity to let that heal, LOL. I'm not sure when surgery is so I'm gonna run as much as possible between now and surgery! My favorite kind of running is a long trail run; I bought a new hydration vest on sale last week and I've decided I am not going to use it until I do my first trail run after mastectomy. Here's to several weeks of Netflix and wearing athleisure!
-
Runnermum- Give the date and the name of the race and ill add it to the list above. Upcoming races are always very motivating
:) and dont worry about pace/time. just go out and do what you do and enjoy the experience. and yes , my race is sat. no more runny/stuffed nose, have the wheezing cough in the morning and at night but i fell ill be able to get through this race. its mostly beachy.. so the views will be great
ReadyAbout- Im sorry to hear you need an MX but I gotta say.. seems like you have the right mindset... "netflix and atheisure" I know people walked.. yes WALK after mx cause us runner types generally dont sit still very well. and forced downtime will allow your hamstring to heal as well so thats a bonus.
I have my 3d mammo on the 19th.. who wants to take bets how many biopsies they're gonna wanna do?? I say 3 ( when they scan me , they want to poke me. when they poke me, they always want to cut it out.. Im 3 for 3 so far)
-
Who caught the awesome Desi Linden win Boston this morning! So inspiring...wasn't planning on running today but will get a quick 3 in now!
Panrath...Hope your half went well!! Good luck with your mammogram on Thursday!
Readyabout hope the recovery time goes fast for you!!! Love that you are giving yourself a little reward to look forward to!
Speaking of surgeries..I am scheduled for a day Vinci hysterectomy in June. Love to hear from those of you who have had one. It is KILLING me to have to take time off from running again. I don't work in the summers and my morning run is my very FAVORITE part of my day and after my shitty summer of diagnosis, Dr appts, surgery, and chemo last summer, I was really looking forward to my summer this year. Will I be able to walk or bike before my 6wks is up? How did your return to running go? Panrath hit the nail on the head when she said us runners don't like to sit for long! Ugh!!
I am running the Fargo Half on May 19th.
-
my race was AMAZING!!!! definitely doing that one again! which I also find funny cause 1. its local, 2 i can run/ walk/ skate/ cartwheel this course any time I want. but goodness , I giggled the whole boardwalk at the beach hehehe my shirt says " Im already planning what Im eating after this" and the pic with the road.. thats mile 3.. and it stayed "open" the whole way. maybe Im just use to crowded Disney races and this is how all local races are

-
Panthrah, WAY TO GO! I love the pics and it looks like it was fantastic weather! I'm glad the race went well!
-
Great Job Panrath!!a Awesome pics!! Love your shirt and jealous of the beach, your running skirt and the sun! We still have snow!!!
Ready about...when is your mx?
-
Surgery set for May 16, thanks for asking! Was hoping to get May 9 because A) teaching/cancer combo has WORN ME OUT and
I had concert tix for later that week that I was excited about, but I have to remind myself that I'm on the right side of the grass. I may join my regular running group for a "field trip" trail run in another town this weekend - supposed to run 12-14 miles, which I haven't done since January, but the thought of being out in the woods is too tempting to pass up! -
spam bot be GONE!! and poof they were gone!
I had my 3d mammo.. extra pics were taken ( of course) but get this.. NO BIOPSY! Whaaat?? that never happens! the Dr was the some one who read my last ultrasound and when she walked in the room and said " heeeey youre the roller derby lady!" hehe I guess Ive made an impression hehe
