edited January 2018 in Waiting for Test Results

Hi All,

I recently turned 40 and had my first mammogram. Due to Dense Breasts I did have a 3-D mammogram. I received a call back 2 weeks later and was told an abnormality found in my right breast. After a 3 week wait, I had a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. The diagnostic mammogram was able to compress the lesion, but the technologist saw a new lump (this was right before my period would have been due-had a hysterectomy 2 months ago). Then I had the ultrasound, I tried not to look as I didn't know what I was looking at. The spaces looked wide and dark. They told me most likely I would not speak with the radiologist afterwards, they would just give me more instructions. Sure enough, the radiologist came to talk to me. Stating he would like to see me again in 6 months to re-do everything to determine if any changes. Then he stated by the look on my face, I could opt now for a core biopsy-which is what I have chosen. I asked what my BIRAD score is at this time and he stated it is a 3. My biopsy was supposed to happen today, but the scheduler forgot to make sure a Dr. was available to do it prior to scheduling and now it is scheduled for January 25. I'm driving myself crazy with worry-which I'm prone to anyhow. I'm looking for some encouragement/prayers as I am terrified during this waiting time. This is consuming me at the moment that I'm having a hard time focusing on everything else.

Thank you,

Carolyn

Welcome Carolyn! I'm Carolyn as well :).

I'm still waiting to see if I have to have a biopsy (initially recommended due to architectural distortion seen in my right breast, had an MRI yesterday for a better look), but from what I've heard a BIRAD score of 3 is a good sign of no cancer.

I completely understand the worrying consuming you! My mammogram was on 12/19, so we're already a month out from that. I go from being totally convinced that everything will come out totally fine to wondering what type of breast cancer I have.

Prayers for you - I hope the biopsy goes smoothly and comes back benign!

    Hi Carolyn!

I know exactly what you mean from being convinced all is ok and then wondering what the diagnosis will be. I'm praying your MRI results are completely clear/benign. I've read some of the posts on various forums here and these women are unbelievably amazing! The waiting is most definitely challenging. The radiologist told me protocol here is if it's cancer, my Primary Dr. will call me to schedule an appointment to go over the results, if benign, the radiology department at the imaging center will call me to tell. Of course I have both number programmed in my phone now.

This community is great! I've gotten some great advice and amazing support from the ladies here.

That's great info that the radiologist shared with you! The center I went to for the MRI said they normally have a 24 hour turnaround on results. I was finished about 2:30 yesterday, but I still hadn't gotten a call. I did check with them, and the tech I spoke to said the radiologist was still reading the results and finishing the report. The report will go to my surgeon, and she'll be the one to call with results. So now I get another two days of waiting.

Hiiii!! I am also 40 and just had my first. What a stresser.. Almost the same as you. Had it Friday- called back Monday, back in Tuesday, met with the radiologist and she wanted me back in 6 months as well for what she said was a dilated duct.. she told me the chances were less than 1% that it was anything but I asked for the biopsy.. had that Wednesday. (This is my second- I had a fibrodenoma removed in 2009) it’s not bad at all and will be worth the peace of mind. I actually got my results today and it was not a dilated duct, it was another fibro- (benign) but back again in 6 months anyway. I’m very lumpy so I asked to listed as high risk so no more waiting in the future.

You’ll do great! It’s quick and like I said the peace of mind will be awesome! Goooooood luck 😘

Thank you so much nekk1977! It is so tough to not let my mind wander to the scary unknown. My radiologist said he believes my % of cancer is 5% or less as he believes them to be fibroadenomas. He didn't go over much more than that with me as I guess my face showed extreme fear. I'm a worrier by nature and I would not have been able to relax for 6 months wondering. This Thursday at least the biopsy will be over, then I wait...again. I too am very lumpy and have been since I was 19. I'm assuming I will be an every 6 month gal for a couple years anyway, but at least now I can know my true baseline. Thank you both so much for your nice words.

Ugh...the waiting is the worst! I had a stereotactic biopsy (mammo guided) last month. It was uncomfortable, as the girls were squished in a mammo machine while I laid face down, but the biopsy itself didn't hurt. The numbed the area, and I didn't really feel anything. Make sure you have a tight sports bra to wear after.I didn't feel any pain until later that night and a little the next day. That stinks that you were all ready to have it done, only to have to reschedule. I hope everything goes well!

I was real nervous about getting my biopsy but everything worked out fine. Just make sure they check to see that your numb before they start. My tumor is on the outside of the breast and the radiology doctor gave me the numbing medicine and then asked whether I was numb on the opposite side of the breast. I was, so she started. I didn't feel a thing and it was over before I knew it. The hardest part for me was laying in the MRI machine as I have major back problems. Good luck and you will be fine.

I hear you! It’s been two weeks since my doctor called to say I needed a biopsy. I had it on Thursday and I actually feel better now that it’s over. One more step completed. The Core Needle Biopsy was not painful for me. They did a good job of telling me what was going to happen at each stage. It did hurt quite a bit that evening and the next day but nothing an ice pack couldn’t fix. (I’m a wossey!)

The waiting is the hardest part. Good luck!

I had the biopsy this morning. It wasn’t bad at all except they had a hard time biopsying one of the lesions as my tissue was too dense and the lesion kept moving. Otherwise all went well. I’m just hoping they have enough tissue samples. Now is the waiting part. I should hear by mid next week. I wish I had patience. Please send positive thoughts my way. Thank you all!

CMH, I am in a similar boat actually, same BIRAD of 3 and all. I was told a 3 month follow up or go ahead, and chose to go ahead. I had mine done the same day as you as well. I follow-up the 2nd, how about you? I am only 32 but had an ooph/hysterectomy almost 7 years ago and have pretty dense breasts too.

    Hi MayDayMelk!

I don’t have a follow up scheduled as a radiologist performed my biopsy. I should hear something this week and I am on pins and needles already. It’s taking everything I have not to search on google today. My hysterectomy was this past November but I kept my ovaries. Praying we both get b9 results!!!

Benign results! 2 fibroadenomas. My follow up is a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound in 6 months. I feel like I can exhale! Thank you everyone for your kind words. I’m very grateful for them
