1st Mammogram -- Call-back:(((((
Hi all! So, I'm 40 and just had my first mammogram. And.....I got a call-back. I was told I have relatively dense breasts and there are 'some areas of asymmetry in the right breast'. The tech said that call-backs on the first mammogram are fairly common, but -- of course -- I'm panicking. Also, that's the breast that's always been more troublesome. It's ropier than the other breast and tends to be achy. My midwife has always told me not to worry about the pain -- neither she, nor I, nor my GP have ever felt any worrisome lumps. Talk me off a ledge!!! Both my grandmother and maternal aunt had breast cancer, so it's always a fear.

Call backs on 1st mammos ARE VERY COMMON. Because they don't have any previous mammos to compare it to.
So hang tight and try not to panic. Get copies of your mammo reports (you have a legal right to them) and we can help you understand what they are seeing.

Yes, call backs are very common. I have dense breasts, so I get call backs EVERY time I have my screening mammo! I don't know why they just don't skip the screening and go straight to diagnostic and mammo. Keep us posted, and I hope it all works out!

Beth keep us posted. Did you get a Birads score during your first mammo? When is the second one scheduled?
-
So, I haven't actually seen the report. And, in all honesty, I'm not sure I want to until my follow up appointment. Googling and discussing what may be in the report will just make me more anxious -- and I think I'd rather wait until I talk to the doctor to see it. Does that make sense? That said, the follow up appointment is Thursday and will be a 3-D mammogram (I think). And, I'll get the results immediately. I have a lot of anxiety around it but I'm hoping for the best! I know the odds are in my favor.....but that's something I know with my head and not my heart.
-
Ok understand about the not wanting to discuss it until it's behind you because of anxiety.
Either way Stay away from Google. Very outdated and often just wrong

I was on the same ledge a few weeks ago. The only difference was that this was my 10 th mammogram. I'm 48 and they noted an asymmetry in my left breast. I was totally freaked out for about a month while they figured things out. Just remember that only 1 out of 10 women that have a call back end up having breast cancer. I was fine with this statistic during the day, but would lose it at night. After my diagnostic mammo and ultrasound, I was a birad 4 and needed a biopsy. Luckily the bx came back benign fibrocystic changes and some paSh whicj is benign as well. Try to kee p focused that the odds are in your favor.

I hope this shows up in the question area. A few days ago I had pain in my upper left breast. I reached down to feel and low and behold there was a huge lump (size of a large egg or golf ball). Wow! I'm immediately on the phone and make a mammogram and ultrasound appt for 3 days later. Next morning pain is gone but I have a tender spot and fairly large bruise. I'm thinking cyst has popped, probably not Cancer. I went to my Mammo/ultrasound appt today and honestly I think they think i was hit in the breast and it's is simply a bruise. I am sorry but I'd remember a hit that hard. If not a bruise then what? Honestly I have no confidence in my results. I'm looking for suggestions. Thxs in advance

Beth any update?

Yes, unfortunately I have to have a biopsy of one spot. The radiologist said she thinks it’s a lymph node — it’s ovoid, no shadowing, and not spiculated. But the rating is Birad 4, which worries me. However, it’s on the inside of the breast, which apparently isn’t a typical place for a lymph node. She offered to follow up in 6 months but recommended I go ahead and have the biopsy so I can — in her words — forget about it. I’m a bundle of nerves but trying to stay positive

Beth, in order for insurance to agree to cover the cost of a biopsy, the radiologist has to give it a BIRAD4.
If they gave it a 3, it most likely would be denied. The shape you stated (ovoid) is very encouraging news.
Please try not to be anxious or panic. Enjoy your weekend.
