I was tested for BRAC and the test came back positive for BRAC2. Due to that I began increased imaging. Unfortunately, I already had melanoma but didn't know it, and soon found out; and then got breast cancer sometime during last year also. All after finding out about this gene mutation which I guess was identified just in time.

    Hi Tknowling, and all,

Genomic testing is a significantly different than gene testing, which may get confusing. Please read up on the main Breastcancer.org site's pages on Tumor Genomic Assays to learn all about the different types of genomic testing and why it could be beneficial to your treatment.

We hope this helps and please let us know if you need more info!

Hi Tknowling, genomic tests include the Oncotype dx and Mammaprint. They look at gene expression on the cells of your breast cancer. The tests determine how likely it is that your bc will return in a 5-10 year period. If you are at low risk for recurrence as determined by the test, you may have the option to skip chemotherapy (but not Tamoxifen/AIs). I'm waiting on the oncotype results and I'm happy it's available, because I'd like to avoid chemo if possible. Before this test became available, more women were encouraged to go through chemotherapy, which has its own risks.
