Core Needle Biopsy Today

edited January 2018 in Waiting for Test Results

I'm 41 and was offered a screening mammogram in December. No family history but as part of the BC Cancer Screening program they offer screening to anyone over 40.

I was told that it was likely I would be recalled because it was my first screening. I got the call to go back for a diagnostic mammogram on January 4. I went to the appointment and the tech said I might also have an ultrasound that same day depending on the diagnostic mammogram image. Ultrasound was required and after the first images the radiologist requested images of my lymph.

The next day I got a call from my family doctor saying there is a suspicious 3mmx3mmx7mm lesion that they want to biopsy. I got a call the next business day with my appointment with a General Surgeon the next day. That appointment was not for a biopsy but she told me that they will “get that thing" out of me whether the biopsy is benign or malignant because it is “very suspicious." They need the biopsy to know whether they will take lymph or not. The ultrasound of my lymph was fine.

Fast forward a week and I had an ultrasound guided core needle biopsy at the hospital today. A Radiologist did the biopsy and he said that he was happy with the samples that they got. He said that the "lesion" is approximately 5mm. Results are supposed to be available in a week and the surgeon is the one that will meet with me.

I'm freaking out. What I think I'm most afraid of is that they will not do enough to deal with this.

As a side note, I'm surprised at how sore I am. They said after a day it would be ok, but so far, still very sore

    Hi Raeleanne,

We're sorry to read that your having health worries.

The waiting for answers can often be the hardest part but we can assure you that you're not alone and hopefully other members will chime in here soon with their knowledge on this issue.

Deep breaths, one day at a time, and remember to take time for some self care everyday.

Sounds like they have everything under control so now you get to wait! None of what you said sounds suspicious for them not dealing with it. If your biopsy comes back as cancer you will need the lymph nodes biopsied (as well as the mass removed). If it's not cancerous then it's a discussion with the surgeon about removing only the mass I would imagine. I think there are noncancerous things they like to take out but I can't remember what or why.

The soreness is totally normal, ice and Tylenol (if you can take it) help. Feel better and hang in there. It will be a very long week of waiting but you will get through it.

Thanks for that. Good to know the soreness is normal! I did use an ice pack last night and I’m doing better today. Now it’s just the mental part and the waiting game
