I was diagnosed this week. My GP called me to tell me over the phone, I was numb. I can't even understand my biopsy result all I can think of is that is growing and I still haven't heard from the hospital about treatment and I just want it out and to get started. I can't sleep from the anxiet.

How long is the wait before seeing a surgeon usually?

Thank you for your help

So sorry you have to be here but welcome. I know you will find this community both full of knowledge and comforting. The time wait to see a breast surgeon varies from facility to facility. May I suggest you see a breast surgeon not a general surgeon? Also I would advise you see someone at a major university teaching hospital. Good luck and keep us posted. We are all here for you. PS It would be helpful if you made your stats public when you know them so we can better answer your questions...

    Hi there,

Sorry about the news. I understand your terror and shock, I felt the same way. My GP was able to get me to see a surgeon right away for my lumpectomy--within a week. I was willing to drop everything for the surgery and pretty much did. I just saw a general surgeon, but he shared my pathology report with me and then recommended an oncologist that turned out to be really good, although I did get a second opinion with another one before I went with the first rec.

My surgeon also rx'd me mild .25 mg Xanax so that I could get through the first weeks. It works well for me and doesn't zonk me out or anything...just takes the edge off. Most of the time I'd just take a half tablet of that rx, and it would still work. Hopefully your GP or surgeon can do the same.

Keep writing here--it helps quell anxiety knowing there are so many of us who've been in your shoes and here we are, doing just fine now.

    Hugs

    Janita:

SO sorry that you have joined our club. But glad you've found us.

All great advice you've already received. I saw a breast surgeon a few days after diagnosis. I went the same day and picked up biopsy pathology results. That I do recall in the haze of anxiety. Ask for a copy. That will help for step one.

I agree with going to major university teaching hospital. I got my 2nd opinion there and eventually, surgery. Advice given to me at that time was: deal with doctors who deal with breast cancer all/every day. Dtad is right about that one.

When you find out more, ask any and all questions. We're here for you.
