QUESTIONS TO ASK DOCTOR IF BIOPSY SHOWS CANCER

I had a stereotactic biopsy done on Wednesday for architectural distortion. No calcifications or lump. My follow up appointment with the doctor is this Thursday and I expect to get results at that time.

In the event I don't have clean results, what questions do I need to ask? What kind of information do I need to obtain so I can be my best advocate? I don't want to leave the appointment and then find I should have gotten x, y, or z information.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions in the event it's not good news.

Hi CMAC and sorry you are facing this concern. You will get a rush of information at once, so most important is to ask for a copy of the report so you can take it home and also have it for other providers. But if there is BC, then size, grade, ER status, and type (IDC, ILC, DCIS) would be important to know. Best wishes for benign findings.

If your biopsy shows cancer then the appointment with your dr will most likely be a "teaching" appointment - and he will throw lots of information at you. It might be a good idea to take someone with you to take notes or record the visit.

Whenever the dr recommends something ask "why". If they recommend follow up in 6 months ask why. If they recommend lumpectomy ask why not mastectomy. Everything they recommend has multiple options and you don't have to just accept their first recommendation.

If this appointment is just to say, okay it's cancer, now go see a surgeon, make sure they send you to a breast surgeon. You'll get your best results from someone who does this all day every day.

Sending hugs and hoping for benign results.

    Lucky

thanks for posting this cmac2006. I have the same question. I live in Canada and have already had a first appointment with a surgeon. Biopsy was today and they also said the results should be in within a week.
