has anyone had a lump appear post mastectomy above or near incision line?

Yep! How along ago was your surgery? I had two of them that I got biopsied and removed. One was a stitch that just never dissolved and the other was this long latin name that meant nothing bad. I got them removed about 4 1/2 years after surgery. What are you doing about it? There is also fat necrosis to consider which is probably what that latin lump was. What does your doctor say?

Thank you so much for the reply, doctor says it has to be removed and biopsy. Problem is i presently after 32 yrs as a nurse do not have a job or insurance. Am looking into obamacare. 2 yrs. post diagnosis.

What did your lumps look like?

The bigger one was just like you described it; like a pea under the skin. That one turned out to be an undissolved stitch. Though I had tape on the surface skin after my double mast, the underneath tissue is stitched together. The second one was hard to discern if bone or tissue but that is the one I think was just fat necrosis. Not so much what they looked like (though I had the surgeon hold up each of the four in total lumps he took out of my body that day!) but more what they felt like. Both were firm. One easily moveable and the other not at all. I also had a lump taken off my arm (looked like an old pimple or something) and then a large lipoma out of my abdomen. All with local freezing!! I wanted to see it all and it wasn't worth going under for. The surgeon afterwards said he realized he should have done it in an operating room instead of a side room once he realized how large my abdomen lump was.

Thank you again for your response. Of course, I am fearful, the surgeon said it was not an emergency but had to come off and biopsy soon. I asked him if he had seen this before and he said "not this soon after surgery" It has been 1.5 yrs post mastectomy bilateral, nipple sparing.
-
He looked at it and said "i dont know what it is" I was hoping for a better response.

There is NO way they can "know" what it is either way!! I hate when a radiologist or doctor tells a woman she has breast cancer before it's even biopsied!! We've had many, many mis-diagnoses here on bco by terrified women who have been scared by someone "guessing".
Bertilda, stay with this thread to ask the question your topic is about; unless you see another similar thread (have you searched yet?). When you go to multiple threads to ask the same question in a thread that is about something else, you begin to looked panicked and people won't want to respond, afraid they will scare you. That's why I said keep US posted. You can post on this thread to "bump" it up to the top of the Active Topics section to draw more attention to it. Even if you just type "bump" in your post, we know that means you need attention and that's okay. This is YOUR thread and you can say on it what YOU want. You can cry, rant, rave or even swear and it is all OKAY. Use it for what you need it for, sweetie!!
We ARE here for you.

Bertilita - I don't know if this will help but I've had several pea sized bump near the incision, but happily they are very symmetrical and on the same place on both breasts. I mentioned it to my onco and she felt like it was undissolved/ dissolving stiches from the Mx. Crossing my fingers that it is nothing for you to worry about but it is good to get it checked.
-
I too, had a lump on my incision, earlier on than yours, but it was an undissolved stitch too. It was out in a jiffy with a scalpel and a pair of tweezers in the Surgeons office.
-
Thank you for all your feedback, I now have medical insurance so will schedule a biopsy.
-
I have a lot of stress in my life and am sure that does not help matters
-
Bertilda - I have two lumps near my incision line. Mine have been declared fat necrosis by my doctors. Hope this helps ease your fears a bit. Wishing benign results for you!
-
Thank you, I just went to doctor and she felt lumps o n breast with implants as well , very frightened
-
What's the next step, Bertilda?
-
need to get biopsy of lump near incision line and see oncologist, all has been on hold due to lack of insurance, just got obamacare start today, have appt w surgeon may 8th and onc. april 18, so upset, have implants under pectoral muscle so not sure about the lumps on breast itself, I feel like this is a nightmare.
-
Thank you for asking, feeling very alone w this.
-
Thank you for your input, I will see oncologist on Friday, my pcp said she felt numerous lumps so I am worried.
-
We are still in your pockets - you are not alone.....prayers headed your way for tomorrow!! It's Good Friday up here, not in the US?
-
once again, my doctor cancelled all afternoon appts. that is the oncologist, the surgeon also cancelled a few wks ago. Thanks for remembering me. Have appts may 5 and may 6 now. The pcp said she felt numerous other lumps so I am scared.
-
bertilda....remember the stitches and fat necrosis we talked about....
-
Thank you Barbe, for saying it again.
-
Try and not stress bertilda, I know that you will still be thinking about it but try and stay possitive, venting is good too...I also had a lump they just removed it yesterday. My doctor said it seemed to be bunched up mesh from the reconstruction...I am praying that it's nothing but something simple....I hope this helps you relax a little.
-
Thank you so much for your input, I am going Monday and Tuesday for appointments, any news on your biopsy results yet Savedbygod?
-
bertilda, i have bumps, too, and imaging just shows far necrosis. hoping that is all it is for you too. are you on antihormonals?
-
I had no chemo and or radiation, no therapy hormonal
-
Neither did I bertilda, just a double mast.
-
Thank you Barbe

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm awfully sorry to read about the stress & procedures caused by new lumps, and I've found myself in the same boat.
Question for anybody having had undissolved stitches: Was your undissolved stitch close to the skin surface or deeper? Did it feel smooth and round or was it bumpy?
Can MRI's miss some tiny tumors about 1-2mm? How can doctors really tell the difference between a tumor and undissolved suture without doing a biopsy? What kind of imaging did you have to determine it was an undissolved suture?
I'm several months post-partial mx and found a new tiny lump, 1-2mm round node 1" above incision. Smaller than a bee-bee, about 1/4" below skin surface. I have to press down hard to feel this tiny node. My surgeon "thinks" it's an undissolved suture. A recent long-awaited MRI did not show anything.

I have numerous bumps near my incision. I had soft tissue massage and it helped a little. Three of the areas broke open and I had scabs that eventually healed. I still have a few and they worry me. I am waiting until my chemo is over to see the surgeon. It has only been a few months.

jenco60,
Can you show those lumps to your oncologist instead of your surgeon?
