I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36 while six months pregnant with my second child. Had lumpectomy, sixteen rounds of chemo and radiation. My oncologist put me on an AI since I was in chemopause and then Lupron shots when my estrogen levels went back up. The Lupron didn't work for me so now I'm on tamoxifen. My oncologist wants me to have my ovaries removed so that I can go back on an AI. I am negative for the genetic tests but do have a gene for blood clots. I'm really struggling with this decision: am scared of cancer returning but it sounds like having ovaries out comes with it's own set of problems. Anyone have any advice or stories to share? Th

Hi Panda, I'm 59 and post-menopausal, and on Tamoxifen because of osteoporosis. So I can't provide direct advice but can encourage you to have your doctor clearly explain to you the difference in recurrence rates FOR YOU at five years, eight years and ten years. There are studies using all three benchmarks so it gets confusing! And the difference between Tamoxifen and an AI may or ma not be significant enough for you to risk removal of your ovaries.

Hang in there and I'm sure someone with direct experience will reply later today.

I had a hysterectomy with spalingo and ooph Oct 25th. The hot flashes are hard and the impending bone loss status post 2yrs is a concern. Also, risks for heart disease, but everyone has that risk as they age...the surgery was robotic and fairly easy recovery..but the lifting restrictions were hard and frustrating. I am 47-48yo (birthday end of month). I had genetic testing done and was negative for any gene, but I did have bilateral breast cancer and that has a hereditary link. My sis passed at 34 from uterine cancer and my older sis has benign breast issues. I had the hyster for cervical caner in situ. I know these decisions are so hard to make, and the repercussions seem endless....right now I am doing well outside the hot flashes and I will talk about those with the doc in January.
