First Chemo Treatment

Hey ladies! I am writing this post on behalf of my mom. She was diagnosed with IDC in October 2017. It's been a crazy couple of months and I have been addicted to reading these boards! They have helped me understand so much. Today was her first of six chemo treatments. She felt good during treatment and a couple hours after. However, this evening has been bad. She has been so nauseous and a horrible headache and other body aches. I know everyone is different but it seems like people don't start experiencing side effects this soon after treatment. I guess I am just wondering if it is normal. She tends to be quite a lightweight so drugs usually hit her hard. She is 51 and generally healthy so she is pushing through. Anyone who can relate with her symptoms let me know!

I would contact her oncologist. They should treat her nausea and make sure side effects aren’t too horrible.

Sorry you are both going through this but glad you found the site. Keep us updated if you can and ask as many questions as you need to.

I can only speak from my experiences but the first day of treatment sounds like her experience minus the nausea. Usually the treatment itself is pretty uneventful and then I go home and watch Netflix or whatever bad TV is available. I will try to nap or go to bed early because I will end up with muscle aches and flu like symptoms. The key to mitigating a LOT of the side effects (besides medications) is staying hydrated. I can not stress that enough. Oh, you think you’ve had enough water? Have another cup. Maybe two.

Call her oncologist if things get too bad. Did they send her home with any meds? She may already have the nausea medications.

Also, you may want to check out some of the “Starting Chemo in Month Year” threads. There is a gold mine of advice in those threads

Hi hailey and welcome to Breastcancer.org,

We're so sorry to hear your mom is experiencing these awful side effects. As you can see, our boards are full of very supportive members, always willing to help! While you receive more suggestions and advice, you may want to also check out the main Breastcancer.org site's Treatment Side Effects section, which lists alphabetically common side effects associated with breast cancer treatment, along with practical advice on managing those side effects.

Also, as frozentoes mentioned, the monthly Chemo threads are chock full of helpful information. Here's the link to December 2017, but there are many others in the Chemo forum you may find helpful!

We hope your mom feels better soon and we look forward to hearing more from you soon!
