Hey Justme111! I had a double mastectomy 12/8 with DIEP. I was up for some conversation and texting the same day-- but not up to really thinking. I was in and out for day 1 and 2. I was more of myself day 3. I was in the hospital 4 days and when I came home, I was up to doing small things on the computer right away. My recovery has been great. I left the hospital taking Tylenol as needed-- but everyone is different. I'm down to 1 drain (abdominal site) and I'm up walking more and more. Today I drove a short distance and it was wonderful! Not doing any lifting over 10 lbs. My doctor told me to maintain that restriction for 8 weeks post surgery. Here's wishing you the best!
-
Hi,Tracy.
Hope the pain starts easing soon! I think everyone recovers at different rates; and surgeries themselves, even if they 'look' the same on paper, in reality they might be quite different in terms of duration and complexity. take care of yourself & good luck with your appointment today.

A little happy dance: my gp called to say the pathology report says clear margins & negative sentinel lymph node.
Yay!
-
Thank you for your positive words. Med Onc wants to send my tumor for oncotype, then we will make further plans for treatment. Ready to be moving forward and back to feeling like myself!!
Tracy

Yay!! Congratulations.

Thanks Tracy!
I'm waiting for oncotype results too. -
I had my bmx on Dec 15 instead of 19 a they rescheduled me, which I had no problem with. Still waiting on pathology, recovery is going well, though. Binge watching tv and missing my girls who are getting spoiled at grandmas. I am doing delayed reconstruction because I may still have to do radiation. Anyone else delay their recon? Drains are the worst part of recovery for me - they make it so hard to sleep! And shower... I did find that i prefer wearing an inside out zip up hoodie with pockets to hold the drains instead ofthe tank to thing they gave me.
-
moth, that is awesome news
-
Thanks Lexica!
It's good your girls are having fun with grandma but yeah, must be hard missing them. It's a good thing we have all the tv shows and internet to distract us these days... I binge watched through a large chunk of The Americans last week -
Quick question for all of you girls. I'm 3 weeks out from my BMX with Direct to Implant and my SNB site is still uncomfortable. I had developed a seroma that was drained about a week and a half ago and while the swelling has gone down and it is getting better I noticed the incision area is hard. Has anyone else experienced this? Have any of you massaged that area? Thanks!
-
MBPooch, when I had surgery on my thyroid last year I was told to start massaging as soon as the incision wasn't raw and I'm doing the same with my SNB incision. The lumpectomy site is still covered by steristrips but I'm also just gently massaging it. hth!
-
Moth, great news re: your pathology! My surgeon called today to tell me that there was no IDC and no DCIS found in my re-excision - go figure! Guess I must have had very close margins in the original lumpectomy tissue! So happy to get this news before the holidays. Have been really impressed with the turnaround on my pathology - three working days in both cases when I was told it might be up to two weeks. Yay Alberta Health, I guess!
MBPooch, I also have some residual hardness beneath my axilla incision. My surgeon told me it is bruising that will eventually be absorbed. I encountered the same thing with my gallbladder surgery last year and it did eventually go away. The larger the incision, the longer it took for the hardness to disappear.
Dance
-
Dance that's great news for you & yeah, so quick!
I think I read somewhere that they look for a certain # of mm clear tissue so it probably was just super close the first time around. Good thing they're being extra careful though it sucks having to have surgery again. Hope you're recovering well! -
Hello All,
Glad to see the good path results. I had my BMX with tissue expanders and SNB 2 days ago on 12/21. Today I took a "shower" with my hand held shower head. I have a couple of questions.
How did you wash your armpits? I just used baby wipes but it's not really the same. Also how long until you used deodorant? I put some on the side without the the SNB today but we have family coming over for Christmas and I don't want to be stinky and really want to use it on both sides. Would you put deodorant on the SNB side?
Also, for pain relief, I'm not feeling relief and don't want to be a baby about it but I couldn't even sleep. I have hydrocodiene and valium (which is supposed to help with the muscle spasms). Is there something better out there? I've back surgery before so thought I had a high pain tolerance but dang....
Thanks,
-
Hey ps0705,
My Dr. has been having me was with hibiclens soap to prevent infection and it seems to take care of/prevent any possible armpit stink. When I leave the house I put on a small amount of natural deodorant just in case but haven't seemed to need it really. It does dry you out though...so I apply lotion every time I change dressings.
I found that ibprophren worked better than opiates for the pain (and this is backed up by some research: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&u...
/www.nsc.org/RxDrugOverdoseDocuments/evidence-summa...&ved=0ahUKEwjAss2fnKLYAhWDwYMKHaKrC4QQFghDMAI&usg=AOvVaw0KMs3Iaw4Y2gcb5cfyPGW6). I found the pain much more manageable when I was allowed to start taking 48 hrs post surgery. I have to stick to a pretty strict schedule of alternating tylenol and ibuprofen every 3 hrs.
For sleep I have found that it is really about finding the right angle to take strain off the surgery site. I sleep partly reclined with my arm propped up and with a pillow and another small pillow on my diaphragm for my hand to rest on. I also have a trazadone prescription from the stress before that I take if I can't seem to stay asleep and it really helps.
Hope this is useful!

I had SNB on both sides so I am also struggling with the deodorant issue, and it’s not cold here in Texas
-
I seem to be developing a seroma under the SNB site. There's no sign of infection, the incision looks the same, but I've got swelling.
I've poked around archives a bit already but if anyone has more advice on what to do with it, I'd appreciate it. -
Sopho- thank you for the hibiclens soap rec. I ordered some on Amazon. I was no ibuprophen so close to surgery but maybe in a few more days I will try some.
Houmon- yes that would be difficult with warm weather. we had snow and temps in the teens today. Inside it's toasty warm though.
Moth - have you contacted your dr? I didn't know what a seroma was but just looked it up as I'm sure you have. Hopefully it disolves on it's own. Sorry you have that to deal with in addition to your surgery. Keep us posted.
-
Moth- you probably already received this advice but my Dr. Told me to wear a binder with extra padding to make sure there was constant pressure to deal with possible seromas.
-
Hope everyone had a happy and peaceful holiday.
In real life time - how long until you received your full pathology from mastectomy? I was told 7-10 days because of the holidays. I'm just wondering if they use the same guestimate as the airlines (typical 45 minute flight is quoted as 1.5 hours so they are always "on time or early") when landing.
-
ps0705- I received my final pathology report about 7 days after surgery.
-
I was told 4-7 and it took the full 7 with the holiday.
-
Thank you Lexica. I appreciate your response.
My Plastic Surgeon set up for me to meet him at the hospital at 6 tonight to (hopefully) remove 1 or both drains. He set this up before I was dismissed on 12/22 so i'm hopeful he will also have the results.
-
I got my pathology report exactly a week after my BMX.
Wow, Ps0705 - did you get your drains out? I had one in 10 days and the other 14 days. It was so nice to get that last one out.
-
I had double mastectomy surgery done two months ago in late October. I thought of having reconstructive surgery and had the expanders put in at the time of surgery. Within two weeks, I started to get anxiety attacks having some foreign object inside me. I decided that I would not go through any reconstructive surgery. I had the expanders removed in next two weeks.
Since the original surgery in October, in addition to swelling in the front, I had two big lumps (size of the egg as I read in some posts) on each side. I still have pain and the lumps feel awkward when the arms are down. The surgeon says it is swelling and the body tissue, it should reduce eventually.
Does any one went through this experience, how long would it take for the lumps to disappear, or does it need extra surgery to even it out.
I am confused, not knowing when this swelling would go away when my body feels like normal?
-
Ghionik - no such luck. DId it hurt when they came out? Both of my drains are still in so we named them Oscar and Felix from the Odd Couple. It was just a change of surgical tape over the stitches and feeling me up (LOL) to make sure things were draining and healing ok.
I get checked next week again. No path report either but tomorrow is a week and with Christmas falling in there it'll probably be later.
-
ps0705, so funny you named your dang drains! I never even thought of that one. Lol. No - zero pain for both drain removals!
Hang in there girl, you’ll get your pathology report soon. You’re almost there. I totally understand the hurry to not worry after what you’ve been through. Hugs. Xoxo
-
No path report. Tomorrow is day 8 from BMX.
It's not even like my boobs were extra big (C cup) so it shouldn't take extra time to sort through all the cells - if that even matters.
-
I bet you hear something tomorrow (Friday for me). Wishing you all good news, my friend. Xox

Good morning all.. well I am now at 2 weeks into recovery from my nipple reconstruction surgery 12/15/17... It went well. Recovery is going slow but good so the nurse says... Hardest part is trying to keep bandage on it.. I seem to pull it off at night...
To all that have gone threw surgery this month and anyone still to be going threw it... I hope all have an easier time in the New Year... I still have the tattooing left to go thru in 2018.
