Anyone take Citalopram/Celexa for night sweats?

I'm hoping someone can help. I'm a month away from finishing chemo and have started having bad night sweats that are really interfering with my sleep. I was prescribed 10 mg of Citalopram (Celexa) and have been taking it for a little over a week. Has anyone else tried this and did it take a while to work? If so, how long? The only other person I know who did had major success after only one pill! I'm hoping there's a chance it will still work and just takes a while to kick in. Also, do these subside a bit after chemo or am I stuck with them?

    Hi!

I take Celexa because of mood swings that developed after I began to take Aromasin. I don't think it has really had much of an impact on my hot flashes or night sweats, but they weren't really bad to start with.

Are you pre-menopausal? Are you planning to do hormonal therapy? I was pre-menopausal, but Zoladex and Aromasin threw me into menopause. My hot flashes/night sweats developed because of this medication.

very interesting as I have been taking 15mg daily of this since 2005 when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, this is an anti inflammatory med.

Hi ElaineTherese, yes, I was having regular periods going into chemo. I can't take hormonal therapy because I'm ER/PR+. Sigh.

Hmmm.... Ckat, you may be confusing hormonal therapy with hormone replacement therapy. Hormonal therapy seeks to prevent the production of estrogen, which feeds ER+/PR+ cancer. If you're pre-menopausal, your oncologist may recommend Tamoxifen. In my case, my oncologist recommended Zoladex (which put me in menopause) and an aromatase inhibitor (Aromasin).

ElaineTherese, sorry I misread that as hormone replacement therapy. Yes, I will be taking hormonal therapy--either Tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor if I end up in permanent menopause. But I'm really really hoping the night sweats aren't as bad as they have been during chemo.
