Hello. I'm 36 and was recently diagnosed with intermediate grade DCIS. I'm trying to make a decision on treatment: mastectomy with reconstruction or lumpectomy. I'd love to hear from others that have been through either option and what their experience was like. I'm leaning towards mastectomy, but I'm not 100%.

    Hi Taylorcm27,

I was diagnosed at age 42 with DCIS but ended up being stage 1 (after surgery). I opted for a lumpectomy. In my case a large section was taken out (about 13 cms of DCIS) and had a reduction on the other side for symmetry. My thought was that if I needed to get a mastectomy later I could always do that.

My margins were clear. I only had 1 surgery - oncoplastic lumpectomy with reduction on the other side.

Wish you the best with your treatment decisions.

    Reikion
