Treatment plan for IDC

At this time I have met with the oncologist, radiologist and the surgeon.

We are currently waiting on the Oncotype test results hopefully they will be here next week. This could change the current treatment plan.

I have one mass 1.6 cm x 1.3 cm in my right breast at 9:00 posterior. It can not be felt at all. I am ER+ PR + and HER2 -.

As it stands now I will do a lumpectomy at the end of this month, sentinel node biopsy, 33 radiation treatments and then the hormone blockers.

I feel like I have a great bunch of Doctors who seem to be quite caring they listen to me and my questions and take the time to explain things.

My nodes showed negative on the ultrasound. I was wondering how many people showed negative on the scan and then the biopsy showed it to be positive?

    Hi stexas,

I don't meet your criteria (my nodes were negative on ultrasound and were also negative following my sentinel node biopsy) but I did have a significant amount of DCIS around my IDC tumour that did not show up on mammogram or ultrasound. This resulted in not achieving clean margins during my lumpectomy (2 margins contained DCIS). I understand that DCIS is often the cause of re-excisions.

My IDC tumour was exactly the same size (1.4 cm) pathologically as clinically, however, which I understand is not overly common. My tumour was quite palpable.

Fingers crossed that your LX and SX go well and your nodes are pathologically clear!

My MRI report showed negative nodes. Post surgical pathology showed two sentinal nodes with micromestasis and then after axillary node dissection there were two fully positive nodes.

I had a positive node on biopsy that was not apparent on any imaging, ultrasound or MRI. It didn't change my treatment plan much. My surgeon was getting me all set up to get a port for definite chemo (because of the lymph node), when the oncologist got wind of the plan and put a hold on everything. She had my tumor cells sent out for Mammaprint (similar to Oncotype) and then the results of that led to the decision to skip chemo. Instead, they radiated the lymph node areas. I don't know if they would have done that otherwise, not sure.

DanceSmartly Thank you for the information. I will make sure to pay attention to the clear margin comment on the pathology report after it is removed.

LeesaD - Basically what y'all are saying is the test seem to miss this a lot.

gb2115 - Thank you for the information. I think its great the Mammaprint saved you from having to do chemo.
