I'm almost three weeks in and still no path report. I don't know what's taking them so long. I am meeting with my BS on Monday, so I'll see if I can get some insight. The golf ball in my armpit is almost gone. I found that to be quite unpleasant. Painful and just felt gross.
I plan on doing the oncotype test, even if my nodes are clear. I was told they treat the cancer quite aggressively in younger women (I'm 47, young for their purposes I guess
). I'm ok with that, although I'm dreading chemo more than I dreaded the mx. But - I have two kids, and am trying to maximize my odds for survival in any way that's available.
-
Clear nodes for me too! And clear margins. What a relief. The tumour was larger than we thought, however. It was a cluster of tumours that connected so they measured them as one. I also had extensive DCIS on the cancer side. Basically the entire right breast was toast. So next steps are the meeting with the oncologist. We'll see.
Hope everyone is doing well. Sending good vibes and kind wishes!

Congratulations Roxy13! That’s fabulous news and I know you’ve been waiting for a long time to get the results. I’m hoping I hear about mine today or tomorrow. I just can’t seem to relax completely until I hear the news. It sure is good to be done with the surgery part though. Hard to believe exactly a week ago from right now I was headed into OR.
I am very happy you got the good news. Go enjoy the rest of your day celebrating!
-
Thank you, @ghionik. Fingers crossed for good results for you as well! Looks like this beast doesn't move all that fast after all. Please let us know what they say! XO
-
Roxy13, mypathology reports were clean! Happy dance! I’m off to see my PS in an hour and hoping I’ll get my drains out today too. I’ve been crying tears of relief since I heard the pathology news an hour ago. Hugs to all going through this journey. Xox
-
That's great news! I know the feeling! I felt euphoric yesterday and today too. Thank you for sharing. Good luck with the drains!!!

-
I didn’t get the drains removed but they are shooting for this a Friday. I have to keep my fluid under 20ml.
-
Ghionik - Great news on your pathology, it's such a relief isn't it! I hear ya on the drains. Still have 1….ugghhh! I have to be below 20 for 48 hours and am so close. Was at 22ml yesterday so hoping for a 20 today and tomorrow so I can be free of these for the weekend!
Roxy13 - I see you had direct to implant as well. How are you recovering? I had my left drain taken out last Friday and am wondering if it was too soon. I had been at 25 and then 20 at my post op so was a little surprised now that I'm hearing I need to be at 20. Feels like there's some fluid build up right in front of my drain incision, did you have any of that?
I find that overall I feel great but had a seroma form at the node incision site that was drained yesterday. That's causing me more pain than anything. That and I have a little cording directly under that left implant. While harmless, man it's uncomfortable!
Hope all the other November girls are healing fast!
-
ghionik - I’m sure the drains feel lighter now that you got a clean path report. Good luck on Friday!
MBPooch - I just saw my PS today. He seemed happy with the incision and how it’s healing. He didn’t mention anything about fluid build-up this time around. He did see something two weeks ago, next to the drain incision, below the breast. It must have reabsorbed. Hope you get that last drain out soon as well!
-
Roxy13 - That makes me feel better. That's exactly where my fluid build up is as well. I'm sure it will reabsorb without issue. It's not painful, I can just feel that it's there!
-
Hi there,
I am new to the site. Had lumpectomy done 21/11 and chemo gonna start soon. Almost 4weeks post op my right arm is still sore and unable to stretch... finding it difficult especially leaving the parking bay and need to slot in the parking card (as well as passing through tolls). Anyone having the same problem? My incision was only about 4 cm
-
Hi Hariry,
My surgery was Nov 20th, so our timing is similar. The back of my right arm feels quite tight still. That’s the side where they removed most of the lymph nodes (apparently the Sentinels were clustered). Today I went for an exercise class, mostly stretches with the Thera bands. I found that was quite helpful, and felt much more mobile at the end of the class. I have to admit, I wasn’t very good about doing the exercises they gave me at the hospital. Speedyrecovery!
-
Roxy13, I got one drain out yesterday by my general surgeon. The right one is the same side the lymph node biopsy was done and is still putting out more fluid than they want to release me from having it. Trying to lay low today so fluid stays low.
My general surgeon is referring me to have physical therapy next month to get my range of motion back. Where my lymph nodes were taken on my right side is still so swollen and tender but she said that will subside. I was looking at how much sleep I get now and wonder how I’ll ever do when I return to work full time. Lol
Glad you’re getting to excercise class! I honestly can’t wait to get back to the gym. I miss my normal routine except for working.
-
That’s great news, ghionik! One more to go. Good luck!
I’m also sleeping a lot. I need a nap to help me get through the day, and I still go to bed at 10pm. I was hoping I would get my energy levels back, but I’m not close....
When are you going back to work? I don’t know what to do at this point. It depends whether I need chemo, I guess. Even with chemo, my BS told me it may be once every three weeks, four times, or six times. It’s a long stretch. I have no idea what my side effects will be. I may feel ok some of the time, so should I go back part time? What if I lose my hair? (Which I will). I have good benefits, and paid Short term disability, but someone has already moved in my office and the contract who’s replacing me was making inquiries about my return (according to my sources). She doesn’t have cancer and I do. Ugh. The decisions are agonizing. I’d be interested to know what everybody is doing.
Best
-
Thanks Roxy, Thera band... Will try to get it and start exercising. Am now lying on hospital bed awaiting my first chemo to kick in.
I'm sure your onc has given advice if chemo is beneficial. I was in denial initially (mine is stg 1, worst 2a, why do I need chemo?) But soon I realized that I should go all out, for the sake of my family my children.
All my best wishes,
-
Roxy13, I’ve escaped having chemo or radiation by having the BMX and having a clean pathology report on my lymph nodes. I’ll only be getting oral meds from my medical oncologist. I only found this out on Tuesday and confirmed by my seeing my breastsurgeon for a follow up appointment yesterday.
I took 6 weeks off work to recover from surgery and to see what my treatment plan would be. I’m still not planning on going back before that time unless I’m feeling a lot better. The past 2 months of this diagnosis has been a roller coaster that has taken a toll on me emotionally. I also am so tired all the time. I sleep so much more than I did prior to surgery. Maybe it’s because we are steal healing. I also have these pesky tissue expanders so will have another few months of these and then an exchange surgery for my implants.
Don’t go back to work before you’re ready. It sounds like you may not not need chemo for sure? If you do, hopefully it won’t be for a long stretch of time. All of this is just so much to process. It’s not fair to worry about your health and having to worry about keeping your job. Just take it one day at a time and recover from surgery you just had a few weeks ago. Hugs. Xoxo
-
Good luck with the chemo, @ Hariry! How are you feeling? My friend’s mom had triple neg bc and did very well with chemo. The only issue they have now: they can’t get her to retire!
She’s feeling great and energetic. There is hope for us too!
Thank you for the kind words, @ghionik. I don’t know if I’ll be doing chemo yet. I am meeting with the oncologist on Tuesday and will see what he says. I have to say I’m a bit confused. The BS said that there will be hormone blockers for sure, as the baseline, then maybe chemo depending on the oncotype results. She also said that this type of tumour is not that responsive to chemo, so I wasn’t clear what’s the purpose then. Also, if the path report is clear, and I had the double mx, what else is the chemo supposed to fight? Very confusing We’ll see what the experts say. I’ll report back.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Hey everybody--glad to hear my surgery sisters are doing well!
I'm pretty much back to 100 percent. I even worked, the past week..I got an Industrial shoot through a casting agency that's booked me a few times before. I had to drive a long ways--the last night, it SNOWED. I have to say, driving through the snow was HORRIBLE. I was pretty scared (it was almost as scary as breast surgery..)
I've had my drain out for a while. Seeing my breast surgeon on Tuesday--I guess she'll give me the oncotype score, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to do any more treatment. My lymphs were clear; she got clear margins, and I'm dedicated to changing my diet and lifestyle. I think that has a lot to do with why I've recovered so fast.
My PS is gonna give me a fill Jan 2--we'll see how it looks but he thinks I'll only need one. Then I can have the exchange surgery.
I'm not too uncomfortable now, but I am looking forward to getting that final implant and putting this all behind me.
-
Good to hear from you SWG! I was wondering how you’ve been doing. 😊
You’ll have to let me know how that fill process goes. I’m still stuck with one drain, but that’s coming out on Monday. I’ve never wanted a Monday to get here as fast as this one. I still haven’t driven yet, but will tomorrow. I’m off pain meds as of last Wednesday or Thursday. Just Tylenol.
I don’t think I’ll be getting many “fills” because my PS put enough in already. Can not wait to get the drain out! The lymph node site is very swollen and painful, but she said that will subside soon.
Hugs to all going through this. It’s good to know we aren’t alone. Xox
-
Ghionik, I'm glad to hear the drain is getting removed!!! You will feel better..just keep an eye out for fluid buildup.
I was getting mild fluid buildup but Ibuprofen (prescip. strength) and massaging the breast helped. I noticed the fluid would go down when I was sleeping. It probably helps to lie on your back.
I have small breasts, so that's why I think he only thinks i need ONE fill. I'll let you know how it goes!
-
Thanks swg!
I plan to be doing lots of watching movies for a few days. I’m not wanting complications from this particular drain removal. My lymph node swelling is still huge on that side.
I bought myself a new Apple Watch to learn new “stuff” that I’d be not as patient to learn prior to surgery.
-
Quick question for all of you girls. I'm 3 weeks out from my BMX with Direct to Implant and my SNB site is still uncomfortable. I had developed a seroma that was drained about a week and a half ago and while the swelling has gone down and it is getting better I noticed the incision area is hard. Has anyone else experienced this? Have any of you massaged that area? Thanks!
-
Hi MBPooch. I haven’t experienced this. The back of my right forearm is a little tender. The incision area is a little hard, but there are also scabs there. Best of luck. My non-expert opinion is that you have no reason to be concerned
Happy holidays everyone! XO
-
I’m almost 3 weeks out from my BMX as well, and also am experiencing swelling and tenderness at my SNB site. It looks a bit better today though. I see my PS on Friday next week and hoping she says all looks good.
Happy holidays ladies!
-
Hi ladies,
My affected arm started to swell, a month after the surgery. Weird.
And my snb scar was tender and slightly inflamed initially, let it heal. No massage I think.
-
Hriry- that sounds like lymphedema. Have you injured/bumped/cut/allowed injection or blood draw from that arm since surgery?
-
Lula73 sounds like it-lymphedema. I probably lean on that side throughout my sleep. And... I had thought about removing my ovaries. Mind if I ask how was the decision made?
-
Hi Nov 2017 surgery buddies!
I had my lumpectomy/sentinel node surgery 22nd Nov. I've mostly recovered well but I certainly know when I've overdone it. Lol. I hope everyone is continuing to recover well and are getting slowly back to normal life. I start RT in a few weeks so I'm enjoying the time off before it all gets real again.
Blessings. Xx

Last week I finally got my pathology report from my GP. I guess my surgeon is away for the holidays. They found both IDC and Lobular cancer calling it mixed type. There was a lymph node found near the cancer in the breast. There was also a lot of necrosis but not central. The tumour shrunk from 2.2 to 1.6 cm which indicates that there was a response to chemo. There were clear margins. The cancer in the lymph nodes spread from 2 to 6. There was 16 lymph nodes removed. The cancer had also spread into the vascular system surrounding the positive lymph nodes. There was no response to chemo in the lymph region. My MO says about 50% chance of recurrance/metastasis. If it goes to the bones they can treat it fairly well. Not so much if it goes to the liver, brain etc. Seems my dream of escaping cancer clinics is not going to come true.
I was not able to get a referral to PT until last week either. I start PT next week so that I can move my arm for radiation and be assessed for lymphedema. I have pain that seems to come and go down into my forearm which I think is probably from swelling from lymphedema. My incision is healing nicely and I am still experiencing swelling, bruising and tenderness although it is way better than it was! My incision was almost a foot long. I still have no feeling in my arm pit and all the way around it.
The results have made Christmas tough. Trying not to cry. It was hard telling my son and other close family members and supportive friends. I am mad that chemo didn't work. Seems like they should have done the surgery first so that it would not have spread in the lymph region. I feel hopeless and wondering how to live life knowing that cancer is running around my body wanting to take root somewhere else. It sucks.
-
Hugs to you Roaming Star. I’m sorry you’re still having to deal with so much worry.
